What Causes Fine Line and Wrinkles Around the Eyes?

Like the rest of the face, the eyes show signs of aging earlier than the rest of the face: fine lines and wrinkles, discoloration, puffiness, and creepiness. While several factors make the skin around the eyes more susceptible to premature aging than skin elsewhere, there are also (thankfully) strategies to help slow things down. Let's take a look at both.

Signs of eye aging: Fine Lines and Wrinkles

What causes it to happen: The skin around our eyes is fragile (up to ten times thinner than the skin on our cheeks or forehead), and we move it all the time by smiling, squinting, blinking, and so on. This combination is similar to doing yoga in linen pants over time.

What to do about it: Look for an eye treatment formula that includes ingredients like natural, nourishing butter and hyaluronic acid, which has been shown to hold 1,000 times its weight in water. To prevent creases from deepening, look for actives like an anti-aging eye cream that support and boost collagen production and maintain the integrity of elastin (the stretchy fibers that make skin elastic).

Signs of eye aging: Crepiness

What causes it to happen: Each year, after the age of 20, the skin produces 1% less collagen. That means you've lost ten percent of your skin's collagen by the time you're 30—and you've lost 30 percent by the time you're 50. What's the result of such a rapid decline? There is a lot of sagging, and the texture is very crepey. To make matters worse, the tissue under the eyes is typically devoid of fat, making the area appear hollow and sunken.

What to do: Smooth and minimize crepiness by using an emollient, profoundly hydrating eye cream twice a day. To keep your skin firm, plump, and taut, use a topical formula that boosts or supports collagen and elastin levels in your skin. Look for active ingredients like peptides to increase collagen production and antioxidants to fight free radicals that can harm the collagen you already have. Try anti-aging skincare products to boost the level of collagen in your skin.

Signs of eye aging: Dryness

What causes it: Eye skin lacks oil glands, so when it's dehydrated, fine lines, bags, and sags are amplified.

What can be done about it: Consider your skin to be a plum: It's plump and juicy when you add water to it. It's a prune without it. Apply deep hydration moisturizer laced with natural butter and hyaluronic acid to your eye skin regularly to replenish its hydration levels. Also, avoid using harsh cleansers on the skin around your eyes. To prevent irritation and exacerbate the dryness, use a makeup remover made specifically for the eyes—or a gentle creamy or oil-based cleanser.

Signs of eye aging: Puffiness and Dark Circles

Because there are so many blood vessels under the eyes, poor circulation can cause puffiness if fluids become backed up. Blood pooling under the eyes can also show through thin skin, giving them a blue cast. Finally, eye skin is very sensitive and can react to skincare ingredients, airborne allergens, or environmental assaults such as pollution, all of which can cause puffiness, redness, and discoloration.

What to do about it: Getting enough sleep and drinking plenty of water can help prevent fluid buildup under the eyes, and using antioxidant-rich topical treatments can help fight the irritation-causing environmental assaults. When cleansing (never scrubbing) and patting on creams or concealers, it's also important to be gentle on delicate eye skin by pressing and gently wiping (never tugging or stretching).

An anti-aging skincare kit combats multiple signs of aging, including crow's feet, dark circles, creepiness, and under-eye puffiness. This proprietary blend contains peptides, hyaluronic acid, Murumuru butter, and antioxidants to smooth, plump, firm, deflate, and even tone.
