Market research is essential for any organization, but it's especially critical for internet enterprises that want to target a certain niche market. The formula is simple: if there is little interest in your product, you will not be able to produce enough sales to stay alive. Before initiating a marketing effort, plan ahead to find a ready and willing market for your product. The Internet provides a wealth of market research tools for small businesses, so there's no excuse for not taking advantage of what's available. It allows you to reach a broader spectrum of customers than you would otherwise be able to.
BUSINESS PLANNING CONCEPT
Your target market does not need to be defined by geography; instead, you will most likely be targeting a group of people who share a common interest. The Web, email, and newsgroups are the three most used methods for conducting online market research. The first is ideal for scouting the competitors (or lack thereof). It pays to research your potential market niche ahead of time, so you can determine whether starting a new business in that niche will be profitable and worth your time and money. For two reasons, researching your competitors is a good idea. First and foremost, determine whether the market you intend to target is over saturated. If there are too many competing firms selling the same thing you wish to sell, breaking in and making a profit will be more challenging. Furthermore, analyzing competitors might assist you in focusing your business on a single area of a crowded market that has yet to be fully exploited. If, on the other hand, you discover that no one else has had the same fantastic idea as you, your firm has a better chance of succeeding.

Second, as the cliché goes, know your adversary. Look at how other companies price their items, what kind of image they project, and how their websites are built. To be competitive, you must have a distinct advantage that distinguishes you from the competition and makes you appealing to your target market. But first, you must understand what will provide you with an advantage. After you've done your research on the competition, prepare a survey with questions about the companies that are already selling in your target market. Of course, questions about your own company should be included in the survey. So, how can you get people to participate in your survey? There are a plethora of internet forums where you can seek advice. Post the survey on your website if you already have one. Alternatively, to get some responses, consider putting brief notices in newsgroups and discussion boards relating to your market region. Newsgroups are also a wonderful way to learn more about your potential clients. What exactly are they discussing? What are the things they're seeking but can't seem to locate?
