The purpose of herpes support groups is to help you deal with the psychological aspect of herpes and provide information about treatment and research. People often write to me to support me. They feel embarrassed, powerless, and dirty or they just want the pain to go away. I do all I can in my book Herpes Wise and on my website to tell people how they can get rid of physical pain, but I am well aware that I cannot offer psychological pain relief to all my students. That’s why I hear that support groups for local herpes are important. The International Herpes Alliance defines the role of the support group as an organization that can provide medical advice, refer patients to clinics and doctors and help people go through different stages of emotion. They say that for many people, herpes is a mental illness, not a physical one. I have to agree with that. People are afraid of herpes and often fear rejection. Some people deny that they are infected with herpes. These are people who do not disclose that they have herpes in their new partners. Deep down, they often feel dirty and insecure and insecure. Going to a herpes support group will help them express themselves and build self-esteem, ultimately breaking the isolation they are trapped in. People often feel very anxious at first. Is this the end of my gender life? Is there a solution? How do I remove it? These are all very common questions. Talking about it freely and not feeling lonely will relieve stress. Some people will talk a lot about it. I am one of them. Some will speak only to a few people. Getting support and staying informed is the first step in arming yourself. People eventually learn to adapt to and control herpes or at least not let it control them. If you feel very anxious, embarrassed or dirty you may want to participate in a local herpes support group. There are several forums online. Online support groups are a good place to start. People can learn to talk about herpes, share personal information and talk to others who are already controlling herpes. Seeing other people move on with their lives frees up part of the anxiety. Offline support groups can provide face-to-face contact. That is important for people who feel shy and are not accustomed to withdrawing from them. Going to a local support group, meeting people, and shaking hands can be an important step in welcoming and loving. I feel that caring for the body part of the disease is like treating 20 percent of pain with pain pills. Doctors often do not provide psychological support for people diagnosed with herpes. Statistics confirm that many people remain dissatisfied with their doctor's appointments. Herpes support groups can provide a friendly environment that a doctor can do. However, they cannot change the fear of herpes growing in our society. Herpes can be controlled and has no power to ruin our love or gender life. We do so. If we accept herpes, perhaps we can help people understand that it is not so bad to have it. We can encourage healthy reactions to STDs in general. You can find a list of local herpes support groups on my website.
