The Indian government has banned Kraft on's Battlegrounds Mobile India. Alphabet Inc's Google and Apple have taken down the Kraft on game on July 28, 2022, citing orders from the Indian government. This development comes a year after the country banned popular game PUBG.
According to Reuters' report, the government has banned the royal battleground format game, using a section of the IT law that it has invoked since 2020 to ban Chinese apps on national security and data sharing concerns, a source told Reuters.
Under a similar provision of IT laws, the government of India banned more than 100 Chinese apps since 2020, including the Chinese publisher Tencent Games' Player Unknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG).
Battlegrounds Mobile India is the Indian version of Tencent's Player Unknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) that recently crossed more than 100 million registered users in India. The Kraft on game was relaunched in India as Battlegrounds Mobile India, a year ago, to the heavy demands of the gamers.
Battlegrounds Mobile India is among the biggest Chinese apps that were relaunched and rebranded after the Government of India banned PUBG mobile on September 02, 2020.
Till now, the Government of India has banned more than 270 apps, suspecting the stealing of Indian users' data and sharing it with Chinese entities.
Many of these apps came back to India with rebranded and new identities, while their competitor apps tried to sweep in and filled the void left by others.
Just like the PUBG and Battlegrounds Mobile India, New State for Indian gamers, Free Fire had also launched the Free Fire Max after the ban of Free Fire.
Earlier this year, a non-profit organization that works for the socio-economic development of society wrote a letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Information Technology, requesting a ban on Battlegrounds Mobile India under section 69A of the Information Technology Act.
Meanwhile, a major study by the University of Oxford said that the short-term mental-health impact of playing video games "is probably too small" to be noticeable.
How PUBG became Battlegrounds Mobile India
Battlegrounds Mobile India's removal comes almost two years after the ban on PUBG. The popular Chinese game was banned along with 100-plus other apps in September 2020. PUBG banned for its affiliation with Chinese publisher Tencent Games. These apps, as per the government, were engaged in activities prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of the country also posing serious threat to Security of the State and defense of India. The government said that these apps can carry out espionage and surveillance activities via camera/mic, accessing fine location (GPS) and do malicious network activity similar to previously blocked apps.
The ban on PUBG was a severe blow for Kraft on as India was one of the biggest markets for the game maker. There were various PUBG tournaments organized in India. Post the ban on PUBG, Kraft to cut its ties with Tencent Games. The company announced that China's Tencent Games would no longer be authorized to distribute the PUBG MOBILE franchise in India. In July 2021, Kraft on launched Battlegrounds Mobile India with tagline 'India Battle Grounds'. Earlier this month, the game hit 100 million registrations mark in India on Google Play Store.
