MUMBAI: India's Pronate Kayak has bagged a bronze medal in the vault section of the 9th Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Doha, Qatar. This is Pronate's second medal in the Asian Championships, making her the only Indian to win two medals in the Continental Championships

Pronate, 27, who competed in last year's Tokyo Olympics, continued to impress as she came up with scores of 13,400 and 13,367 in the first and second vault respectively. She thus finished with an overall score of 13,367 at Doha on Friday evening.

This is Pronate's second medal in the Asian Championships, adding to the bronze she won in the 2019 edition in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

She thus become the first gymnast to win two medals in the continental championship. Ashish Kumar hard won a bronze medal in the floor exercise in 2006 in Surat while dip carmaker, who finished fourth in the Rio Olympic Games, claimed a bronze in 2015 in Hiroshima, Japan, making it four medals in all in the Asian championships.

With this, pronate also qualified for the world artistic gymnastics championships to be held in liver pool, UK,  in October-November this year.

India had sent an eight-member contingent-four men and four women-to participate in the 9th  Asian championships.

BUDAPEST: While other stars conserved their energy on the opening morning of the World Swimming Championships in Budapest on Saturday, Katie Bedeck made a statement in her first qualifying swim.

In the women's 400 m freestyle qualifying, the 25-year-old American was the only swimmer to break four minutes, finishing in 3 min 59.79sec, 3.40sec ahead of Canadian 15-year-old sensation Summer McIntosh.   Bedeck's greatest rival, Australian Ariane Titus, is skipping the championships. Titus overhauled Bedeck on the final lap in the last worlds in 2019. The first time Bedeck had lost in the event in a major championship. Titus then edged Bedeck in the Olympic final last year and ended the American's eight-year grip on the world record in May, with a time of 3 min 56.40 sec. On Saturday, Bedeck may have left the field trailing in her wake, but she was still more than 2 seconds behind her phantom foe. Home favorite Katina Honshu opened the championships, in the women's 200 m individual medley first round. Hungary's 'Iron Lady', who won two world titles the last time the championships were in Budapest, qualified 11th 2.36 slower than American Alex Walsh and five-and-a-half seconds outside her own world record.
