Might help prevent cancer

Some studies suggest that drinking coffee may reduce your risk of developing certain malignancies.

Another study that produced similar findings also revealed that coffee may reduce the risk of colon cancer. Coffee had no effect on total cancer risk, which was another comparable conclusion from this study (8Trusted Source).

More study is still needed to fully understand how coffee use may raise the chance of developing cancer.

May provide defense against neurodegenerative disorders

Many people drink coffee to become more awake. Actually, the caffeine it contains is thought to be a nootropic, or a substance that enhances mental function.

In one study with 59 individuals, the effects of regular coffee, decaf coffee, and a placebo drink on mood and brain function were evaluated.

Regular coffee has been shown to increase alertness and decrease reaction time when compared to the placebo. It increased test accuracy more than decaf coffee and decreased weariness and headaches.   

But decaf coffee consumers also mentioned feeling more awake than the placebo group. This suggests that the cognitive advantages of coffee may not just be due to the caffeine it contains, but also that decaf coffee may have its own version of the placebo effect.
