WHAT ARE THE USES OF ELECTRICITY
Of all the discoveries made in the last century and the present, the discovery of electricity has been easily the most useful. It has practically revolutionized the world.
There is not a single phase of modern life that is not in some way or other related to this important discovery. The present age has been truly described as an age of electricity.
The electric telegraph, the electric light, the electric tram, the electric bell, the electric train, the electric car, the electroplating, the electric fan, and the electric stove are no longer regarded as wonders.
We have grown quite familiar with these things in everyday use. But the application of electricity in curing paralysis and nervous diseases is indeed a miracle of this scientific age.
Much of the prosperity of a country depends upon its water supply. Electricity has enabled us to distribute the water of the rivers into canals and irrigate dry and barren lands.
The Bhakra Dam in Punjab, the Hirakud project in Orissa, and the Damodar Valley Project, etc., owe their existence to electricity. Then, electricity has enabled us to make use of wireless telegraphy.
In the days gone by, if the ship foundered in mid-ocean, no help could be sent to it, but now every ship carries with it a wireless set; and a timely SOS has made it possible for us to send immediate help and rescue the ship-wrecked passengers.
The invention of the radio, which has conferred untold blessings upon humanity, would not have been possible had there been no electricity.
Every police car is wireless, and many police officers carry tiny wireless sets on their wrists. Broadcasting by itself is a miracle of electricity.
It has been utilized to treat nervous diseases using the electric battery and localize injuries using X-rays in medicine.
There are other wonders of electricity that have astonished the world. How do men flying high in the air keep themselves warm?
They have electric wires woven into their garments to resist the cold of the upper air. Then electricity has given us artificial gems more beautiful than natural ones.
To get gems, we are no longer required to dive deep into an ocean and endanger our lives unnecessarily. Attempts are being made in western countries to produce electricity clouds and bring down rain in places at the desired time.
And when this miracle is performed, it will be the greatest achievement of the present age. Electricity has indeed done marvels in the twentieth century.
It propels our tramcars; it works the mills and factories; it pumps the ocean dry; it sweeps our houses, cooks our food, washes our clothes, grinds our corns, burns the rubbish lying in streets, and heats our houses in winter.
It runs our manufacturing plants; it lifts the heaviest weight, regulates the water supply in irrigated areas, and enables us to talk to people living thousands of kilometers away.
It helps us in diagnosing internal diseases and curing our chronic physical disorders. And as time advances and more researches are made, these will prove a powerful factor in lengthening the span of human life.
