All the following 10 causes of death accounted for more than half of the overall death globally. All these causes of death are related to heart diseases, respiratory diseases, and neonatal diseases. Total number of lives lost, are associated with three broad topics: cardiovascular (ischaemic heart disease, stroke), respiratory (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lower respiratory infections) and neonatal conditions – which include birth asphyxia and birth trauma, neonatal sepsis and infections, and preterm birth complications.
Diseases can be categorised in to communicable and non-communicable diseases. Communicable diseases are infectious and can be spread one to one. Noncommunicable diseases are not infectious. Globally 7 of the 10 leading causes of deaths are noncommunicable diseases.
1. Ischaemic heart diseases
Ischemic heart diseases are the no 1 killer which are responsible for 16% of the total deaths. Ischemic heart diseases occurred mainly due to blockage of the blood vessels which supply the heart. People who are diagnosed with diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and who are smokers, have more risk to develop ischaemic heart diseases. But it can be prevented by early diagnosis, proper clinic follows up and lifestyle modification.
2. Stroke
Stroke is the second most common cause of death globally which is responsible for 11% of total deaths globally. It occurs due to the blockage of blood vessels which supply the brain. Like in ischaemic heart disease, people who are diagnosed with diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and who are smokers, have more risk to develop stroke also. Most of the time stroke results in paralysis, but sometimes and lead to death also.
3. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
COPD is a disease which occurred due to the constriction of lower airway tract which is an irreversible and prolonged condition unlike Asthma where airway limitation is reversible. It is responsible for 6% of total deaths globally. Smoking is the major risk factor. Cessation of Smoking and proper clinical management will reduce the mortality.
4. Lower respiratory tract infections
Lower respiratory infections ranked as the 4th leading cause of death. But considering communicable diseases only, it is the first in the list. Infections like pneumonia and bronchiolitis are considered as lower respiratory tract infections. They are more common in children and elderly. Developing a good immunity power with proper diet and exercise and controlling other diseases like diabetes will help to prevent lower respiratory tract infections.
5. Neonatal conditions
Neonatal conditions are ranked 5th. New-borns are called neonates until their first 28 days. Severe respiratory distress, Severe infections and heart diseases are some neonatal conditions which are fatal.A good health care during pregnancy will reduce the incidences of neonatal conditions.
6. Respiratory tract cancers.
Trachea, bronchus, and lung cancers are ranked 6th among leading causes of death. Smoking and occupational exposure to polluted air are the most common risk factors. Lung cancers are very vigorous which spread early and not curable.
7. Alzheimer’s disease
It is ranked as the 7th leading cause of death. Alzheimer’s disease is a condition which results in memory impairment due to progressive loss of neurones in the brain. Women are disproportionately affected Mostly.
8.Diarrhoea
Mainly in children, diarrhoea can lead to death due to severe water loss from the body. However, with proper management deaths can be prevented. Oral rehydration solution plays main role in the treatment of diarrhoea.
9.Diabetes mellitus
Diabetes mellitus is a disease where our blood glucose is not properly maintained by insulin hormone. So, blood glucose is elevated persistently and damages most of the tissues in the body involving heart, blood vessels, kidney eyes and nerves. So, people with Diabetes mellitus can develop heart diseases and kidney diseases which are the major cause of death. Maintaining blood glucose under control with proper diet and meditation will help to prevent death.
10. kidney diseases
Kidney diseases have risen from the world’s 13th leading cause of death to the 10th. Diabetes mellitus and high blood pressure are the main reasons for the kidney diseases. Chronic kidney failure is the condition where our kidney couldn't excrete water and other waste products from our body.
