For those who like an action-packed itinerary, there are enough things to do in Boston to keep you constantly on your toes. From watching a baseball game at Fenway Park (try catching a game played by local team the Boston Red Sox), and a free concert or movie at the Hatch Shell, to catching an orchestra performance at the extremely grand and majestic Symphony Hall, kayaking down Charles River, taking a whale watching tour at sunset and sampling free beer at the Samuel Adams Brewery—you’ll never have a dull moment in the city.
Surround yourself with ocean blue and wait for the fins and tail
Word to the wise: Special sunset tours are available. The highlight of these romantic cruises is when the sun dips past the horizon and whales seem to spout on cue.
The ship that chased Moby Dick set sail from Nantucket, 100 miles south of Boston. But the tours setting off from the New England Aquarium won't be captained by a madman, and the whales are meant to be watched, not killed.
Voted the best in the city, the whale-watch tours operated by the Aquarium whisk adventurers out to sea on the 'Voyager III', a high-speed catamaran with naturalists and educators onboard. The boat heads to Stellwagen Bank Marine Sanctuary, where whales, dolphins, and sea birds come to feed. You could sight several species of whales, including humpback, finback, pilot, and right whales. Dolphins, too, if you're lucky.
Best of all, whale sightings are guaranteed. And if no whales make an appearance, passengers will get a complimentary whale-watch ticket to use in the future.
A magical brewery tour... topped with free beer
Word to the wise: Valid ID is necessary to sample beer. For those not from the US or Canada, a passport or copy of passport ID is needed.
The hoppy scent in the air and the gleam of giant copper vats may inspire fantasies akin to ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. Alas, there are no rivers of beer to swim through, but a free tour will teach you about the history of patriot/brewer Samuel Adams and the artful craft of his namesake brews. Guides are funny and knowledgeable, and you’ll get to feel and taste malts and hops as you learn about the brewing process.
Afterward, visitors are led into a ‘beer garden’ to enjoy at least three kinds of beers, even those that aren’t yet on the market. If you're still thirsty, a free trolley will take you to Doyle’s, the first bar to put Sam Adams on tap.
Tours last about an hour and depart approximately every 45 minutes. Tickets are distributed on a first arrival basis. To avoid long waits, arrive as early as possible.
