Focus on your breathing. Inhale and exhale
Now that we have the elements we need to meditate, now is the time for you to try it. My preferred way to sit when meditating is to cross my legs and place my hands on my knees with open palms facing up. If you cannot cross your legs, simply sit with your legs straight. If you are sitting in a chair, simply spread your leg apart and place your hands on your knees.
The next step on the path to peace is to close your eyes and take a deep breath and then slowly exhale the air. You need to repeat this process consistently, but while you are doing it, there are a few important things to keep in mind. When you first start meditating you will find that when you relax things that have been bothering you during the day will start to resurface and come to the forefront of your mind and we have to stop this during meditation because if you don't you can end up with more stress, than when you started. As you breathe, simply look into the depths of darkness and clear your mind.
If you find it hard to let go, try this technique. As you inhale slowly, focus your mind on the number one, and as you exhale, focus on the number. Then, as you take your second breath, change the one to a two and then focus on the two and maintain that focus as you exhale. With each new breath, focus on the next number. However, if you ever get distracted and start thinking about what to make for dinner or what to do tomorrow, then simply start from square one. You'll find that after a while, using this process will really help you maintain that focus and start bringing inner peace much faster.
If you have trouble sleeping, I find that using the counting and breathing process really helps a lot. Again, it takes time to master the technique, but the more you practice, the better you will get at it.
Clear your mind
Once you have mastered the breathing process and come to a relaxed state, the next stage is to clear the mind. It may take some work and it will take time to conquer it, but when you conquer it, you really won't know what inner peace is. To clear your mind, you simply won't think about anything other than just existing. The key to clearing your mind is to focus on the space around you (with your eyes closed) without thinking about anything.
When you do, an overwhelming sense of peace washes over you. You will find that the endorphins will give you a tingling sensation all over your body and you will be extremely calm. Over time, you'll find that you can actually turn the tingling on at will, but that comes with practice.
Feel a rush of peace
Buddhists talk about meditating to achieve enlightenment, and while it may take a lifetime or two to achieve it, I can safely say that when you get to the point where you are free of your surroundings and at peace, it will definitely feel it. like a whole new world. At the very least, not being stressed and feeling that constant buzz caused by the pressures of our daily lives will surely give you a new definition of normal.
When you feel that your meditation time is over, slowly allow your mind to start thinking. You will find that it is actually much easier than you think. Then slowly open your eyes and be aware of your surroundings. Give yourself a good five minutes before rushing to get up, but when you do, you should feel calm and peaceful around your body, mind and soul.
