What are the Negative Impact of Science and Technology?

Introduction

Numerous changes have been made to human civilization and the environment as a result of science and technology. In some countries, science and technology have aided in the growth of more sophisticated economies and a leisure class. Though science and technology have many beneficial benefits for humankind and the environment, they have also led to certain severe issues that have several unfavorable or unpleasant repercussions on humankind and the environment.

Therefore, not every technology has been applied for good. From clubs and spears to nuclear bombs, the creation of weapons with ever-increasing destructive capacity has advanced throughout history.

Many modern activities harm the world and its ecology by wasting natural resources and creating undesirable byproducts known as pollution. Additionally, different technological applications have an impact on societal values, and emerging technology frequently poses fresh ethical dilemmas.

As a result, there have been conceptual conflicts over the existing and potential uses of technology in society, as well as whether they would improve or deteriorate the human state. Meanwhile, a few of science and technology's unfavorable repercussions are as follows:

Production of destructive and offensive weapons:

Swords, arrows, and wooden clubs were the only kind of weapons utilized in battle and hunting in the prehistoric culture. The development of these led to the development of Dane guns, double barrel guns, machine guns, grenades, bombs, and finally nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons. These are all the results of technology and science. The development of nuclear weapons of mass devastation has been disturbingly on the rise thanks to advances in science and technology.

Every nation aspires to obtain and store nuclear weapons in case an enemy or hostile nation decides to attack. The development of man's lethal arsenals with varying degrees and capacity for his own devastation has been made possible by the expansion of science and technology. A whole country can be destroyed in a matter of minutes by a single atomic or hydrogen bomb.

However, governments spend a large portion of their resources on purchasing these lethal weapons without taking into account the negative or long-term impacts on society. In a sense, the world is sitting on a ticking time bomb right now as every country shamelessly and unrestrained amasses nuclear weapons.

Technological Unemployment:

Increased automation brought on by science and technology leads to technological unemployment. This occurs when machines complete tasks that should have been completed by people. In other words, mechanization reduces or even eliminates opportunities for human workers by replacing them with machines.

Accidents and Deaths:

Few accidents happened when man used animals for transportation and trekked as a mode of transportation. But as technology has developed and led to the creation and widespread usage of vehicles like airplanes, trains, ships, speedboats, cars, and motorcycles, the number of fatalities and accidents has significantly increased.

Industrial accidents sometimes happen, in addition to traffic accidents. There are incidents where people are electrocuted, drowned in acid, burned to death, or lose limbs at work as a result of malfunctioning mechanical equipment. Additionally, technologically advanced structures like flyovers, bridges and other high-tech buildings and structures have all unexpectedly collapsed in the past and even now, killing people.

Increase in Crimes:

Since science and technology made it possible to produce tools and gadgets like potent guns, explosives, and other lethal weapons, crime has been on the rise. Utilizing computers, the internet, and other communication tools has considerably facilitated fraudsters' ability to easily steal from and con their victim. Banks and other financial businesses are particular targets for hackers and fraudsters who specialize in defrauding banks as a result of the recent obsession with computerization.

Loss of Values and Cultures:

Nigerian society is on the verge of losing its values and culture permanently given the present fashions, communication, amusement, computer technology, the arts, and education, among other areas. Technology and science have given us the means to deprive our children's minds of all traditional values and traditions.

Today's young women have lost all respect for morals and decency. They dress in a degrading, humiliating manner in an effort to resemble the whites in the name of fashion. Thanks to science and technology, our kids are always in danger of completely forgetting and discarding our values and traditions.

Degradation of Environment:

Concern over environmental damage has spread both domestically and internationally. The advancements in science and technology have caused significant environmental damage and pollution. Water pollution, global climate change, and depletion of natural resources are all caused by industries, refineries, engine smoke, and trash.

This layer of ozone, known as the ozone, is crucial because it shields or shields people from the sun's radiation. People can be exposed to direct sunlight, which is dangerous as it can lead to malignancy and frostbite when the natural environment is worn down or depleted as a consequence of natural pollution or deterioration.

Pollution:

Environmental degradation is the large-scale release of materials or energy into the environment, including carbon oxide, carbon tri oxide from internal combustion engines, radioactive rays, nitrogen and sulfur oxides, soot, dirt, dust, aerosols, pesticides, sewage, crude oil, etc.

They have the potential to contaminate soil and water, putting the lives of animals and plants in peril. One of the worst side effects of industrial technology is this. Pollutants can harm your health and, in extreme situations, result in the death of people, animals, and plants. They can also cause mutation, corrosion, the demise of aquatic species, and the contamination of the water used for home and industrial purposes.

Noise pollution can take the shape of sirens from trains, loudspeakers, planes, and supersonic jets. All of these are negative developments in science and technology that are destructive to both people and animals.
