And yet, while there is an extensive body of scientific evidence that links heavy alcohol consumption to various health problems, there are few studies on how these problems affect animals and human children. Scientists conducted a study that they hope can provide some answers to that question.

 

The scientists, who published their findings in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, designed a study with mice. They wanted to know whether heavy drinking can affect the size of the animals' brains.

 

The researchers focused on a region of the brain called the hippocampus, which is involved in learning, memory, and spatial navigation. The hippocampus can shrink in humans with alcoholism, and this is associated with cognitive impairment. The scientists used mice for their study because it's easier to observe changes in mouse brains than those of human beings. And although mice are not identical to human beings in all ways, many brain functions are shared across mammalian species.

Cancer of the breast, mouth, throat, esophagus, voice box, liver, colon, and rectum.
