What are the Features Of CAT5e and CAT 6 Ethernet Cables: Uses And Applications

In this leading era of digitalisation, upgraded ethernet cables are used frequently to increase internet bandwidth speeds. These cables are generally used to connect devices with the Local Area Networks (LANs). Ethernet cables have evolved and have been categorised as cat 5e and cat 6 ethernet cable based on the demand of network performance. 

Whatis CAT5e Ethernet Cable?

CAT 5e, known as Category 5 enhanced ethernet cable, is a special type of internet cable network that was approved in 1999. This provides 10 times more advanced network performance than the previous version of CAT 5 cables. These cables have 24 gauge twisted pair wires that support 1 Gigabit networks at a distance of 100m without any latency. 

What is CAT6 Ethernet Cable?     

CAT 6, or Category 6 ethernet cables, came into the market after the cat5e ethernet cable. These cables have twisted pairs with backwards-compatible CAT 5 or CAT 3 cables. These are standardised twisted pairs of wires that provide 1000 Mbps ethernet speed up to 100m but sometimes provide 10 gigabit speed for a longer range. 

Although they share some similarities, still they have certain distinguishing features, which will be discussed as follows.

1. Bandwidth  

The cat 5e and a cat 6 ethernet cable can handle a speed of 1000 Mbps, which is more than most of the internet connections. But, the main difference is the bandwidth of the two cables. The CAT 6 cables can operate at frequencies of 250 Mhz, compared to CAT 5e, which operates at 100 Mhz. Therefore, CAT 6 has the ability to process more data than CAT5e cables. 

2. Internet Speed

The CAT 6 ethernet cables have more data processing capacity than a cat 5e ethernet cable; therefore, they provide more internet speed performance. This happens due to the differences in the bandwidth of the two cables. The CAT 6 operates at 250 Mhz, which is double that of CAT 5e cables; therefore, the CAT 6 provides a 10-G Gigabit Internet Network.  

3. Maximized Length

Both the cables provide lengths of 100m internet network segments, which is the maximal length for achievable speeds. If the distance is increased, then the internet connection will get slow and need to be improved through repeaters and switches. 

CAT 6 cables show reduced speed when the distance is around 55m, whereas cat 5e ethernet cable provides optimum speed at 100m. Therefore, CAT 5e operates more on maximised length than CAT 6 cables. It is recommended to use Augmented CAT 6 Cables when using at 10G-Base at 100m length.   

4. Visual Features

The cable categories are generally printed on the cables to identify them; otherwise, it is difficult to distinguish between the two. Mostly, a cat 6 ethernet cable is thicker than 5e due to the presence of thicker copper wires.  

Applications

Cat 5e ethernet cables are mostly used in home internet networks, including browsing, sharing of files, and downloading processes. These are mostly optimized for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) applications.

On the other hand, Cat 6 cables are used for high-performance networking services and multimedia streaming processes like data transfers for data centres and high business purposes. It is also used for streaming Ultra HD or 4K videos and other bandwidth-intensive applications.   

Conclusion 

The cat 5e ethernet cable are mostly used for regular internet applications like home networking processes. In contrast, Cat 6 cables are used for high-performance internet services like multimedia streaming and advanced data transferring operations. 

Cat 6 is recommended for greater bandwidth and speed for data centers, or large business startups. The choice between the cable depends on the requirement of the network and the types of data trafficking processes.
