What are the best ways to think about ideas for a startup?
Startups are within the company to develop a specific product or service.
Bringing it to a modest me taller and developing an irresistible and irreplaceable customer.
If this is the idea you want, there are many fun and creative ways to come up with them.
The trick is to test the ideas to see if they really work.
But if you want ideas for the test, there are several options:
Create what you personally want or need. Then see if others need it.
The Kaufman Foundation has researched and found that almost 40% of successful entrepreneurs are this type of user entrepreneur.
Separate your product. Take some simple product or service, and then increase it a bit with the point of sale.
Apply new business models to old products. Take some simple product or service and remix the business model.
Concentrate around the work to be done.
What are you trying to do that is not fully designed for any product in your life I need to eat healthy on the go, I need to keep my SO happy, my SO Harvard professor Clayton Christensen said businesses that integrate "on the work to be done" are very profitable and have no competitors.
Solve the industry-wide problem. Take a product or service in the industry. Find the most annoying thing about that product or service. Then solve the most terrible problem.
Unbind parts of previous business. Mark Anderson and Clayton Christensen refer to these as key business trends. For example, think of Twitter, which is just Facebook status.
Who would have thought we could only have one Facebook status? Or get Pinterest. Who would have thought that we only need a newsfeed with pictures? Got my drift?
Compete against consumption.
This is another Clayton Kristensen word, which means find a better product than anything and sell it to that group. A good example of this is the group of non-consumers of the product due to various limitations (geography, lack of money, skills, etc.).
They will give you what you want in any place where you were previously restricted from being in those places.
Threaten existing competitors with a low-cost business model. Think of a product or business model innovation that disrupts the money-making systems of existing businesses. For example, digital cameras completely beat Kodak, because the whole way Kodak makes money is based on old-school cameras.
This is another Clayton Christensen concept, known as the "disruptive invention".
Think of ways to help people. As my marketing professor told us, do not sit around and think about how you can make money by selling backpacks.
Think about how you can give people the backpack they really want and learn how to make money while you are at it.
Top Test !!! Test !!! Test !!!! I'm going to say simple lean startup hype, but you have no way of knowing what people are buying until you get their feedback. Ideas are useless unless you have paying customers.
Developing and adapting your business model to suit your market and industry is key to success.
So try to make the business idea as simple as possible. Focus on ideas that solve one problem; shy away from businesses where, to enter the market, the product or service must solve multiple problems before it is viable.
