What are the benefits of having a good sleep?
Sleeping can reduce your anxiety, fatigue and depression and improve mood and concentration, finds a new study. In what can be called good news, we can now say that having a good sleep is better than working out or having a good dinner. According to a new study conducted by the Sleep and Working Group, sleeping can reduce your anxiety, fatigue and depression and improve mood and concentration. It also improves immunity by reducing stress and may even delay the ageing process by helping to regenerate your body tissues. The study was led by The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and was published in the journal Sleep. Sleep expert Robert Stickgold from Harvard University was quoted in a PTI report saying, "A good night's sleep is associated with many beneficial effects on health such as a reduced risk of mortality, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and depression." Stickgold further said, "Sleep doesn't benefit everyone equally and those who are not getting the sleep they need are at a higher risk of disease." He also said that for people who have trouble sleeping, it's important to change their lives in order to improve their quality of sleep. Stickgold said that a good way to improve sleep quality is to improve sleep hygiene, and increasing light exposure and quit smoking. Stickgold said that doing things to improve sleep hygiene like going to bed at the same time, not drinking alcohol or caffeine after 10 pm, using a dark screen like a computer or TV, keeping the room dark, avoiding exercise close to bedtime, taking melatonin, making your bedroom cosy and having your bedroom look cool can all improve sleep. Another expert on sleep, Michael Grandner, associate director for the Sleep and Health Research Program in the University of Arizona College of Medicine, also supported the finding saying, "The take-home message is that in this day and age, we really can improve our health by making simple changes to the environment and by getting adequate sleep.", what are the benefits of good sleep? Sleeping can help you get rid of stress and depression Trying to work out without getting enough sleep can make it harder for your body to lose weight and could even affect your mood and performance. According to a study, trying to work out after only 5 hours of sleep can impact the way your body works and is likely to impact the following day's performance. Sleeping can help with weight loss Drinking coffee in the morning or even eating before going to bed can impact your sleep cycle, making it harder for you to fall asleep and stay asleep for long. Good sleep quality improves your brain power Studies have found that having a bad quality of sleep can impact the speed of your brain by sending signals to your body to make you feel tired. Hence, sleeping more can help. Sleeping helps with mental stimulation Getting a good night's sleep can help with mental tasks like remembering and solving problems. Sleeping helps your body to regenerate Stickgold said, "The regeneration process depends on sleep and people who are sleeping more are actually improving their body's capacity to regenerate. So it does have an impact on preventing the ageing process."
