The term "pet" refers to something that is maintained or tamed for affection and friendship. A pet can be a living creature, a plant, or even an inanimate item. You may have a houseplant you like, but you would not refer to it as your pet. It is only regarded as a pet if it is given to you as a duty. You are responsible for its well-being, safety, and security as its caregiver.
