FOUNDATION OF THE QURAN
The Quran is an Arabic word, meaning "repetition" and "reading."
The power of the Quran lies in oral reading, as it is recited aloud and in music. These verses are written to help students memorize, collect, and organize a book.
The Quran does not say in chronological order, unlike the Genesis account of creation. The verses of the Quran focus on the one message that Allah is the only true God, and Muhammad is His Messenger.
Unlike the Bible, the Quran does not focus on genealogies, chronology, or history. Instead, it uses these events to convey the message of oneness with Allah.
For more than 23 years, the Quran has been recited in various sections. Many verses or passages were designed to respond to specific events. The angel Gabriel used to reveal this to the Prophet Muhammad to respond to those who did not believe in this message. The Prophet was instructed on what to do when faced with rejection by unbelievers.
People will understand the basic message of the texts in the Quran, given the social and historical context.
ORGAQURAN
The Quran consists of 114 sections or chapters of varying lengths. In Arabic, each branch of the Quran is called surah, while the sentences or phrases are called ayah, meaning 'mark.' The Quran is divided into separate 'verses' or units.
As mentioned, the parts or chapters of the Quran are not equal in length. God determines the beginning and the end of these verses. With this, scholars in the first century after the death of the Prophet Muhammad have divided the Qur'an into thirty (30) parts. The reason for this is to enable people to memorize or read it in a systematic way.
During Ramadan, one part is recited every night, and the whole Quran is completed at the end of the month of fasting.
QURAN STYLE, TITLES, AND SUBJECTS
The main text of the Quran focuses on the important message that there is only one God, Allah, and how you can live life according to His will.
Other topics include theology, creation, criminal and social law, Judaism, Christianity and pluralism, social norms, morals, history, stories of past prophets, and science (Mufti, 2017).
