What Are Abrasives?
Aluminum oxide is another common abrasive materials. These produce excellent results due to how hard of a mineral these are. They are also more cost effective than other abrasive materials. They also produce little to no dust when used on a surface. This is compared to other abrasive materials which are dustier.
Silicon Carbide
Silicon carbide is also a sharp and hard abrasive materials. It is one of the other two most commonly used abrasive materials. That other one is aluminum oxide which is also used silicon carbide. It is also brittle and wears more easily. This is not very durable and is ideally used on non-metallic and low-tensile strength surfaces.
Cubic Boron Nitride
Cubic Boron Nitride is one of the best abrasive materials to use. This is because it is almost as efficient as a diamond with being the 2nd hardest material known. These are also very stable with the ability to withstand high temperatures which is why these can be used for high speeds.

Uses of Abrasive Materials
Polishing
Workpieces are polished using abrasive materials. Polishing involves the aggressive action of smoothing out the surface of an object using an abrasive. This process enhances the attribute of the object. It also helps in preventing the object from corroding and oxidizing. Workpieces that are polished include kitchenware, architectural metals, and handrails.
Grinding
Grinding uses grinding wheels that, of abrasive materials. They are cutting tools. These cutting tools are such that each grain of the abrasive material acts as a single-point cutting edge, thus the term abrasive cutting also applies.
Drilling
Drilling involves the process of making a hole into a solid surface. It is also termed as a cutting process. The drill bit that is used to make the hole consists abrasive materials that form the needed sharp edge for drilling. There is a wide variety of materials that can be drilled, such as metals, wood, and plastic.
Lapping
Lapping is a process of rubbing two surfaces together, while an abrasive is placed between them. To produce a precise surface texture, lapping is done and usually follows grinding.
Honing is used to improve an object's shape. An abrasive is used to scrub the metal along a predetermined pattern. These are abrasive materials in the form of grains bonded together by a cement-like compound.
