WHAT ARE THE 5 FACTORS THAT CAN CAUSE HAIR LOSS?

Have you been dealing with hair loss? According to dermatologists, we lose about 50 to 100 strands of hair a day - which may sound like a lot, but it's a healthy amount to complete the streak cycle. However, it is important to turn on the warning signal when you notice hair falling out a lot and all over the house. In this case, several factors can be linked to this loss, such as stress, alopecia, and others. With that in mind, DermaClub and dermatologist Carolina Marçon listed 5 reasons behind hair loss and the care needed to fight them.

Why does hair loss happen?

Before discovering the main causes of hair loss, it is important to understand how the hair cycle works. According to the dermatologist, these phases already include a fall period. “Our hair has three phases: anagen, catagen, and telogen. The first lasts 4 years, and the strands adhere to the hair follicle. In the second, the transition phase takes place for 15 days. There is a natural hair loss that lasts from 3 to 6 months”, he says. For this reason, the concern begins when this drop becomes more pronounced, which could mean that external factors are influencing the health of the hair follicle and resulting in hair loss.

Hair falling out a lot: what can it be?

When it comes to hair loss, several factors can influence the condition. See the main ones below:

  1. Stress: Stress and anxiety situations imply a major hormonal change, such as the loss of cortisol, which can result in hair loss;

  1. Frequent chemical procedures: treatments such as progressive brushing, coloring, and other chemicals can be a risk to the threads, causing a fragility in the shaft, reflecting in breakage or even loss of the threads - if a powerful substance is used;

  1. Continuous use of medications: the use of some medications can lead to hair loss. Therefore, before starting to take any medication, be aware of the side effects to prevent hair loss;

  1. Postpartum and hormonal changes: the change in hormones after pregnancy is also one of the reasons for hair loss. Three or six months after having the baby, it is  possible to notice the hair falling out a lot in the postpartum period ;

  1. Restrictive diets: a diet with restriction in the intake of some nutrients, such as proteins, vitamin B12, and iron, can negatively impact the hair, resulting in hair loss.

How to treat hair loss?

Because it is caused by several factors, it is important to keep in mind that the first step to ensure a good treatment is to identify the cause of hair loss. “The idea is to look for a dermatologist to carry out an adequate assessment and thus find the factor behind this fall. Generally, a clinical investigation and nutritional tests are the most indicated”, says the dermatologist. It is important to be aware of hormonal changes, such as in the thyroid, if there is any lack of nutrients in the body or a systemic disease factor in the patient.

Once diagnosed, hair loss can be treated with measures that prevent this loss according to the cause of each person. “A food supplementation, for example, can help in the recovery of the hair, as well as a topical treatment with products that stimulate circulation in the scalp,” reveals the professional. In addition, the use of a low-intensity laser, hair micro-needling, and an energizing hairline can also help combat hair loss.

Is it possible to prevent hair loss?

According to Dr. Carolina, some simple measures can help prevent hair loss. “Having a healthy diet and a physical activity routine to ensure the body's functioning is essential,” he says. In addition, it is important to invest in mechanisms that help control stress, which is largely responsible for hair loss. Meditation, yoga, and therapy, for example, are activities that can contribute to a lighter and healthier life.
