Whether you experience tension and fear occasionally or constantly, stress and anxiety can take a toll on your energy and positive outlook. Health care providers can offer you treatment for an anxiety disorder, but you can also do some of your own self-help.
Follow these 10 tips to reduce your anxiety and bring your life into better balance.
1. Physical Activeness
Regular physical activity increases brain chemicals that control mood and affect anxiety. Thirty minutes of vigorous aerobic activity can relieve anxiety symptoms in some people. Some studies say that a brisk 10-minute walk can be just as beneficial and provide hours of relief, similar to taking an aspirin for a headache.
Researchers in one study found that those who regularly exercised vigorously were 25 percent less likely to develop depression or an anxiety disorder over the next five years. The range of positive effects may vary from person to person, but the mental and physical benefits of exercise are widely accepted.
Sufficient sleep and a healthy diet also contribute to overall physical and mental well-being.
2. Regular Meditate
Studies show that meditation can calm you down and improve anxiety. Regular meditation can help by increasing activity in the area of your brain responsible for feelings of calm and joy. Yoga and Tai Chi are also known to reduce stress. Deep breathing exercises provide immediate relief and may even lower your blood pressure.
3. Stop Taking Drugs & Alcohol
This is especially true if you have strong levels of anxiety. These substances can disrupt your emotional balance and sleep cycles and interact with medications. Coffee, energy drinks and cigarettes make anxiety worse. Even some over-the-counter cold medications can worsen the symptoms of anxiety disorders.
4. Talk with Your Health Care Professional
Talk to your primary care doctor about whether your anxiety is within a range that you can manage on your own, or if you would benefit from treatment. Develop a plan that works for you and ask to adjust it as needed.
5. Find Your Triggers and Disorders
If you know what increases your anxiety, try to reduce the stress around those triggers. If you don't like crowds, go see a movie that's been out for a month rather than attend opening weekend. Take a short walk before a big meeting.
6. Make a To-do List
Organize your day. Whether you're at work or at home, it's important to create a to-do list and prioritize your projects. Don't overdo it, ask for help if you need it, and take breaks throughout the day.
7. Quit Smoking
Quit smoking and limit or stop drinking caffeinated beverages. Nicotine and caffeine can make anxiety worse
8. Make a proper sleep
Do what you can to make sure you get enough sleep to feel rested. If you're not sleeping well, talk to your healthcare provider.
9. Eat Healthy Diet
A healthful diet that includes vegetables, fruits, grains, and fish may help to reduced anxiety.
10. Look up for Support
Most of us find it helpful to tell others about our worries. If you have an anxiety disorder, consider creating a support group or self-help group to share your struggles and progress. A trusted friend can also be a good listener that will help in reducing anxiety.
