Based on the Marvel Comics character Iron Fist, Scott Buck produced the American television series Marvel's Iron Fist for the streaming site Netflix. It was the fourth Marvel Netflix series that preceded the crossover miniseries The Defenders (2017) and is based in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), sharing continuity with the franchise's motion pictures. Marvel Television and ABC Studios collaborated to produce the show, with Buck serving as showrunner for the first season and Raven Metzner overseeing the second.
Finn Jones plays Danny Rand, also known as Iron Fist, a master of martial arts who possesses the ethereal "Iron Fist" strength. In addition to Ramón Rodríguez, David Wenham, Rosario Dawson, and Jessica Stroup, the cast also includes Jessica Henwick, Tom Pelphrey, Sacha Dhawan, and Alice Eve and Simone Missick for the first season. Development for the series started in late 2013 at Marvel Television, drawing influence from martial arts movies, following more than ten years of work on a film based on Iron Fist at Marvel Studios. Jones was cast as Rand in February 2016, Buck was hired as showrunner in December 2015, while Brett Chan oversaw stunt coordination for the first season.
In July 2017, it was announced that Metzner will be running the second season as showrunner, with Clayton Barber taking over as fight coordinator. The location for filming was New York City.
On March 17, 2017, the full 13-episode first season of Netflix was made available. Critics gave it mostly bad reviews, although third-party data analytics showed that the show had a sizable audience. On September 7, 2018, a second 10-episode season was released to largely positive but varied reviews. Iron Fist was canceled by Netflix on October 12, 2018. On March 1, 2022, all Marvel Netflix programs were taken from the platform as Disney was granted permission to reclaim the license for them. Disney+ started offering them for streaming on March 16.
