What are Hypersonic Missiles?

Recently, everyone is talking about China's  Hypersonic missiles test. China has recently tested a hypersonic missile that can defeat every stronger missile defense system of the world. It began a new arm race in the world. Many countries such as Russia and America have been working on this technology for many years. Here we are discussing hypersonic missiles and how actually they work.

Before going towards hypersonic missiles, we have to know about the subsonic and supersonic missiles. Subsonic missiles are the missiles that move at a speed of 0.9 Mach. Mach is basically a unit to measure the speed of sound. Subsonic missiles travel at a speed less than the speed of sound while Supersonic missiles moves with the speed of Mach 2 and Mach 3 that is almost 2300 mph. US Tomahawk and Russian Brahmas are the subsonic and supersonic missiles, respectively.

Hypersonic missiles are the missiles that travel through the speed of Mach 5 (3836mph) that is utmost five times greater than speed of sound. It can resist every radar greater than ballistic missiles.

Types of hypersonic missiles

Hypersonic missiles are basically of two types.

Hypersonic cruise missiles requires jet engine to attack on target with high speed at a specific place. They are non-ballistic missile that don't require gravitational pull to approach its target.

Hypersonic Glide Vehicles reach towards its target through re-entry vehicles. It travels through the atmosphere and fall on its specific target.  Missiles are attached with glide vehicles that enter into the atmosphere and provide enough speed to the missile to avert the existing missile defense system. Hypersonic good vehicle remain in the atmosphere at 40-100 km high and reach toward its target by overcoming the air pressure.

Hypersonic missile of different countries

Hypersonic missile always remain a secret but for the few years many countries announced their projects. It has a huge benefit over supersonic and subsonic missiles.

China had left both USA and Russia far behind in Hypersonic technology. Recently, China has conducted a hypersonic glide vehicle missiles test that travels over the South China Sea with five times greater speed than speed of sound. They developed a Hypersonic Glide Vehicle that can also hold nuclear weapons.

Russia has been working on hypersonic missiles for the long time, but they stayed behind to China. Russian President Vladimir Putin recently announced that Russia’s Zircon hypersonic cruise missile is utmost completed and will be tested in 2022.

USA in this case lagging behind the China and Russia. Also, USA has been working on these missiles but till now no significant developments have been made by the USA researchers. China and Russia both has the ability to strike against F-35 missiles of the USA by the hypersonic missiles. In 2019 president Donald Trump approved a budget to bridge the hole with respect to missile technology.

Besides it, many other countries such as North Korea is also trying to improve its nuclear capabilities through working on hypersonic missiles.

Hypersonic missiles have changed the foreign policy of the world. Also, it provides strong deterrence against enemies, but it can also cause instability and a new arm race in the world.
