"Healthy living" for many people means both physical and mental health is balanced or works well together in a person. In many cases, physical and mental health are closely linked, so that the change (good or bad) affects one another. As a result, some tips will include suggestions for "healthy" emotional and mental health.
Healthy eating (food and nutrition)
All people should eat food to grow and maintain a healthy body, but we humans have different needs for healthy eating like infants, children (children), teens, adults, adults and the elderly. For example, infants may need to be fed every 4 hours until they grow slowly and begin to eat solid food. Eventually they grow into a normal diet three times a day as young children. However, as many parents know, children, teens, and adults alike often eat between meals. Snacks are usually not limited to these age groups because adults and adults often do the same.
Tips:
Eat healthy meals three times a day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner); it is important to remember that dinner does not have to be the biggest meal.
A large portion of food consumption should consist of healthy foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat or low-fat dairy products.
Include lean meat, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts (with an emphasis on beans and nuts) in a healthy diet.
Choose foods low in fat, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and extra sugar; look for labels because the first items on the label list include high concentration of ingredients.
Control component sizes; eat small portions that can alleviate hunger and stop eating.
Healthy snacks are GOOD in moderation and should contain things like fruit, grains, or nuts to satisfy hunger and not cause obesity.
Avoid sodas and sugary drinks because of the high calories in soda and sugary drinks; food drinks may not be a good choice as they make some people hungry and increase food consumption.
Avoid eating a large meal before bed to reduce gastroesophageal reflux and obesity.
When a person is angry or depressed, diet will not solve these problems and may make the underlying problems worse.
Avoid rewarding children with light sugary snacks; such a practice may be a lifelong habit of humans.
Avoid hard foods in the summer months, especially during hot days.
The vegetarian lifestyle has been encouraged to live a healthy lifestyle and to lose weight; vegetarians should check with their doctors to make sure they are getting enough vitamins, minerals, and iron in their diet.
Cooking (over 165 F) destroys many harmful bacteria and other germs; if you choose to eat raw foods such as fruits or vegetables, they should be washed thoroughly with running tap water (safe to drink) just before eating.
Avoid eating raw or undercooked meat of any kind.
Special situation tips:
People with diabetes should use the above tips and monitor their glucose levels as instructed; try to keep daily glucose levels as close to normal as possible.
People with unusual activities (night shifts, college students, military) should try to stick to a breakfast, lunch, and dinner routine with a small snack.
Food processors should avoid using fats or frying foods in grease.
People who are trying to lose weight (body fat) should avoid all fatty and sugary foods and eat mainly vegetables, fruits, and nuts and significantly reduce their intake of meat and dairy products.
Seek medical advice early if you are in control of your weight, your diet, or if you have diabetes and are unable to control your glucose levels
