what are Health is Wealth: Meaning, Examples, Origin, Expansion, Importance

Meaning

The saying 'health is wealth' is obviously related to the wealth that a person stores in the form of his health. In other words, this phrase shows that if one is healthy, one has a lot of potential to acquire wealth through hard work and labor. But, on the other hand, if a person is not in good health, then his/her chances of working and earning money are greatly reduced. So, it means to say that if you want to become rich, then the first condition is that you have to be healthy.

Examples

Example is the best way to understand the true meaning of any proverb. Keeping this in mind, I have come up with some recent examples based on the proverb 'Health is wealth' which will help you understand this proverb better.

“John, you should take care of your health first, after all, health is wealth.”

"I think the company should think about the health of its employees apart from just thinking about its profit. After all, they can only work when they are healthy!"

"There is no logic in doing business by compromising on your health because once a wise person has said that health is wealth."

Farmers are able to work in the fields because their body is very strong; Indeed, health is wealth."

“No one can accumulate wealth when he is in a sorry state of health because he cannot work” – Health is wealth!

Origin

The phrase 'health is wealth' was first used by Ralph Waldo Emerson, an American essayist, and philosopher who lived during the 19th century.

He used this phrase in reference to the American people, stating that health is more important than wealth and that health is the real wealth of any person.

However, this is not exactly the same as 'health is wealth', which Emerson wrote in one of his works in 1860; Yet, the meaning was much the same. He wrote this – “The first wealth is health”.

It is clear that Emerson placed health above wealth and believed that this was the true wealth any person could achieve.

With the passage of time, the phrase was simplified slightly; However, the meaning remained roughly the same.

Today, the widely used phrase 'Health is wealth' is nothing but a simplified version of what Emerson wrote in 1860 - "The first wealth is health".

Expansion of idea

The proverb 'Health is wealth' is the proverb which very wisely teaches us that we can get all the materialistic things, money, whatever we desire, only when we are healthy.

Health gives you the strength to work hard and achieve everything you ever wanted. On the other hand, if you are not healthy, weak and debilitated, then it will be really difficult for you to work and make your dreams come true.

In other contexts, it also means that money is of no importance as long as the person is unwell. Just imagine if you had all the wealth in the world. You can eat the most expensive food, even in the most expensive restaurant, but your health does not allow you to do so! What a sad event that would be. At that very moment, wouldn't you want to sacrifice your extra money for your favorite food? In fact, this is what this phrase 'Health is Wealth' tries to teach us.

Importance

The phrase 'Health is wealth' is a very important phrase, considering it tells us about the true wealth of life. The true wealth of life is actually health. If a person is in good health then only he will be able to work and take care of his near and dear ones.

In today's competitive environment, we often neglect our health and get involved in an intense race to become richer than anyone else we know. It is a blind race because eventually, when you lose your health, you will also lose your money or it will become unimportant to you. Wouldn't that be sad and disappointing; That is why, it is health that we should give the first priority. If we are healthy, then accumulating wealth is only a matter of time.
