Effects of COVID-19 on Culture
The effects of coronavirus are having a damaging impact on health services around the world. Beyond the instantaneous threat to life, COVID-19 is also disturbing cultural values. The COVID-19 responses have been hypothesized on physical distancing. Physical distancing does not necessarily put a stop to social connectivity, but social distancing inevitably assumes disconnections. Everyone is experiencing cultural shock because of this virus.
Effects on Cultural Norms:
New social norms emerged due to COVID-19 overnight. Shaking hands is normally a prominent action used to greet others in many cultures. Since the pandemic started, alternative greetings have quickly appeared, such as the wave, elbow bump, and the Vulcan salute. But none of these has become prominent yet. Marriages were held simple to avoid the gathering of people. Also, surgical masks appeared in public. With the high demand, the price of single surgical masks increased. People started using germicidal wipes and sanitizers. Conferences and events all over the world were canceled. We must change our behavior in this critical time if we hope to minimize the social and economic impact of the pandemic.
Effects on Material Culture:
Material culture also has a big impact on COVID-19. People started wearing masks while going outside, using sanitizers much more and, keeping a particular distance in public places like malls and parks. Also, due to the closure of institutes, companies, and other public places, the community structure has been changed. It started looking isolated as material culture is the outgrowth of non-material culture to see the impacts of COVID-19 on them. Food is an important part of any culture, and due to COVID-19, people stopped eating junk foods from restaurants and preferred homemade meals. This has a great impact on the expression of cultural identity.
Effects on Education:
COVID-19 causes major interruptions in education. Due to the closure of schools and educational institutes, students aren`t able to seek proper knowledge. Schools promote studies and develop communicational and social skills that are unable to develop during pandemics. However, teaching and student assessments are moving online but with a lot of errors and uncertainty.
Effects on Community Culture:
In a pandemic, there`s our changing sense of community as the physical radius of our everyday life shrinks, and we became more aware of and even dependent upon neighbors. And our relationships with our families, homes, and our sense of domesticity are boosted via cooking, painting, and other household things. This causes a change in community culture.
Effects on Global culture:
Due to COVID-19 worldwide cultures like tourism and worldwide traveling. And affects the trade among countries, worldwide businesses, and the whole world`s economy. Mainly it affected the educational system and health sector of all countries. Also, this virus has a great impact on the food chain among countries. Activities and skills: Staying in our homes has affected our activities. Now a person is gaining more skills due to spare time such as gardening, painting, other online courses like graphic designing, etc. On the other hand, COVID-19 has affected our communication and social skills badly.
Information Technology:
As the pandemic started, our way of living has changed. People started using more internet and become more active on social media because of social distancing. Nowadays, we are more used to the internet and doing all our online work in lockdown, such as online teaching, online shopping, online banking, etc. There is an impact of technology on cultural values and human behavior. A saying goes, “a crisis provides an opportunity,” and the COVID-19 pandemic provides a great opportunity to promote positive technology.
Cultural Diffusion:
Due to coronavirus, all cultural events have been canceled, cultural institutes are closed, and many practices have been suspended. Also, national meetings and events have been canceled, so the spread of cultural beliefs and social activities from one society to another come to an end. The closure of Museums poses great challenges in terms of access to culture. Many museums adopted online solutions like virtual tours, but this isn`t possible for all museums due to limited capacities. Some countries are planning to open museums and galleries, but many are worried about their future survival.
Cultural Economy:
COVID-19 has affected the source of supply and affects the global economy. There are restrictions on traveling from one country to another country. During traveling, many cases are identified when tested, especially when they are taking international tours. Many developing countries that are reliant on tourism will be more affected by this crisis. The closure of companies, institutes, and other factories has affected the economy and struck workers, especially lower-paid employees who have lost jobs.
Cultural Lag:
As COVID-19 affected the whole world. Some elements of culture change rapidly concerning others, such as in
this lockdown trend of social media increases compared to live events. Technology moves quickly, generating more occasions to communicate and handle our business at home compared to other elements of society. Also, the norms of a culture change quickly.
Cultural Change:
Change in one part of culture usually sparks change in others. To gain health safety, society changes many other parts like social behavior and business, which also has an impact on the economy. Due to COVID-19 day to day life is too much affected, and it also disrupted world trade and movements.
Social Circle:
It can feel like ordinary life has changed in many ways. Many large groups events and activities have been canceled, and that weren`t have strict safety measures in place. Many people feel lonely and isolated. Keeping social distancing changes our gathering styles, such as zoom dinners, video visits, and small outdoor get-togethers keeping a safe distance from others.
Social control:
Mutual behavioral, social control is needed nowadays. As a global community, we are learning how thousands or millions of individual decisions can affect society. Some counties need both formal and informal social control bur some only need formal control. Essential community controls during COVID-19 lockdown include health screening, food supplies, sanitization, and information distribution. First of all, everyone should keep social distancing as a primary precaution.
Culture after COVID-19:
Recovery from this may well do fatal damage to our cultural infrastructure. Cities will gradually come back to life, pollution will again rise, and social and cultural interchange will return, but the cultural economy is hard.
