The 2016 American superhero movie Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice is based on the Batman and Superman comics characters. It is the second movie in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) and a follow-up to 2013's Man of Steel, both of which are distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. Ben Affleck as Batman and Henry Cavill as Superman are among the ensemble cast members, which also includes Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter, and Gal Gadot. The film was directed by Zack Snyder and written by Chris Terrio and David S. Goyer. The first live-action picture featuring both Batman and Superman together and the first live-action cinematic depiction of Wonder Woman is Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. In the movie,The master criminal Lex Luthor coerces Batman into a preventative conflict with Superman, whom he is obsessed with eliminating.At the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con, the movie was revealed following the debut of Man of Steel. Snyder explained that the movie would have an original plot but acknowledged that it would draw inspiration from Frank Miller's Batman comic book series The Dark Knight Returns. As a cinematic reinvention of the character, Batman's incarnation in the movie differs from Christian Bale's earlier portrayal of the character in The Dark Knight Trilogy. "The Death of Superman" serves as another source of narrative inspiration for the movie. In October 2013, pre-production got underway at East Los Angeles College, and principal photography got underway in May 2014 at
Detroit. Later that December, more filming wrapped up in New Mexico and Illinois.
On March 19, 2016, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice made its world premiere at Mexico City's Auditorio Nacional. It was later released on March 25, 2016, in the United States. After a phenomenal opening weekend that broke box office records, the movie had a historic collapse in its second weekend and never bounced back. Even though it made $873.6 million worldwide, ranking as the sixth highest-grossing movie of 2016, the movie fell short of the reviewers' expectations and got mostly negative reviews. Later in 2016, an expanded version with 31 minutes of further footage—dubbed the "Ultimate Edition"—was made available on home media platforms.
