Ajello Candle Company was founded by Rafael Ajello, an Italian artist. He was also a beekeeper, so he tried his hand using beeswax to make candles. He worked hard to create an effective formula. The formula, combined with his outstanding artistic ability, led to the birth of the Ajello Candle Company. In 1785, the company became famous for creating all the Vatican candles. He and his wife owned a business, keeping their children involved in activities from an early age. In time, their children and grandchildren continued to run the business and passed on the family business to their children.
By 1862, the company had established itself as a leader in the candle-making industry. They added many fragrances and colors to their list of prominent candles. The decision to expand the business in Manhattan, New York. In both cases, the business prospered. The kings and nobles of Italy demanded the services of the Ajello Candle Company. They designed candles for weddings, funerals, and celebrations. They made candles for the installation of the King of Spain in 1876, Pope Pius IX in 1878, and Pope Leo in 1902. Hollywood celebrities and wealthy people in Beverly Hills California were looking for Ajello Candle Company candles as well. Candles were also ordered by President Roosevelt, Charles Lindbergh, and Rudolph Valentino.
In 1922, the Ajello Candle Company made a memorial candle for their deceased friend Enrico Caruso. This candle was 18 feet long and weighed more than a ton. It is estimated that this candle can burn up to 24 hours a day for 1,800 years before it expires. This monumental candle is still the largest ever made in the world. Each year, two lights are lit to commemorate Enrico Caruso's birth and death.
The Ajello Candle Company continued to grow and sales exceeded expectations in Italy and the United States. In 1953 the company was asked to build 2,200 candles for the anointing of Queen Elizabeth. The company is honored to meet the request, and all candles are ready in six months. Ajello Candle Company was asked to buy it, but it refused. The family wanted their candle business to remain that way, not a big company.
Despite Ajello Candle Company's creative efforts, they were unable to meet the demand for their candles in 1965 during a power outage in New York City. For years computers have found Ajello Candle Company providing candles online. Ironically, as Rafael Ajello worked day and night to make candles for this need, his wife was rushing their baby to the hospital in search of candles in her room.
