WHAT!!!!Another Webb telescope instrument gets the 'go for science'

The second of NASA's James Webb Space Telescope's four main scientific instruments, known as the Mid-Infrared (MIRI) spacecraft, has completed its post-launch preparations and is now ready for science.

 

The final mode of MIRI is to test its coronagraphic imaging capabilities, which use two different styles of masks to deliberately block the starlight from striking its nerves when attempting to look at the orbiting planets of the star. These custom-made masks allow scientists to see directly the exoplanet and study the discs of dust near their holding stars in an unprecedented way.

 

 

 

Along with three other Webb instruments, MIRI first cooled in the shadow of a tennis court to the size of a tennis court at about 90 Kelvin (minus 298 degrees Fahrenheit, or subtract 183 degrees Celsius). Performing target science meant dropping below 7 Kelvin — just a few degrees above the minimum possible temperature — by using an electric cryocooler. These active temperatures allow MIRI to produce medium-infrared images and spectra with an unprecedented combination of sharpness and sensitivity.

Webb MIRI spectroscopy animation: A beam of light from a telescope then reflected in a deep blue color into the metal through an exit mirror located at the top of the instrument and acts as a periscope.

Then, a series of mirrors redirect the light to the bottom of the metal where a set of 4 spectroscopic modules are located. Once it arrives, light rays are separated by a dentroic material called 4 radiation that connects the different parts of the central infrared circuit. Each beam comes into its own special place; these components separate and convert light from the rest of the viewing field, ready to be dispersed in spectra. This requires light to be folded, folded and separated several times, making this one of Webb's most complex light sources.
