Real Madrid's 2021-22 La Liga win has seen Carlo Ancelotti make history, with the Italian becoming the first manager to win a top-flight title in all of Europe's big five leagues Which league titles has Ancelotti won? 

Real Madrid fell to a 1-0 defeat to Barcelona in their first match of pre-season, but Carlo Ancelotti took a lot of positives away from the trip to Las Vegas. The coach started his post-match comments by saying:  It was a good match with a lot of intensity, especially in the first half. I thought it was an even game. I tried to spread out the minutes because of everyone’s physical condition. Obviously when you play Casimir, Toni Kroos and Luka Modrić it’s easier, but I also wanted to play some younger players. Overall, I liked this performance against an opponent that is very strong.

Ancelotti on Benzema’s preparation

Karim Benzema didn’t play in this Clásico, and the coach provided an update on the Frenchman. He stated: 'When we face Club America, he’ll play 45 minutes, and then he’ll play more against Juventus. In that game, I’ll try out the team that will probably start the UEFA Super Cup.'

One interesting aspect of this game was the fact that AntonioRudiger played out wide as a left-back and that DavidAlaba played center-back, after many reports suggesting the Austrian would play mostly at left-back this season. On this, Ancelotti said: 'DavidAlaba will only play left-back when it’s necessary, as I don’t want to break up the successful team of last season. I liked what AntonioRudiger did as a full-back, although I’m not crazy, and I know that’s not his main position. He can play there or switch with DavidAlaba. He’s very intelligent.'

Eden Hazard is one of the main mysteries of the 2022/23 squad, as he looks fit again, while it’s also not clear what position he’ll play in this campaign. On that, Ancelotti said: 'He can play in many positions, and he can also adapt to the false nine position. He just needs minutes to improve his conditioning.'

The Italian was also asked if Real Madrid fans can expect more signings, but he shut that down, stating that 'The squad is finalized, and we have many players. I think we have a better squad than the one we had last year. You can see that the intensity in training has improved.' 

A glimpse of Immediate Reaction: Real Madrid 0-1 Barcelona  

El Clásico was a suitable choice for the very first pre-season outing for Real Madrid, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Fans flocked to the Allegiance  stadium in huge numbers, and would not have been disappointed by either line-up. Barcelona fielded Robert Lewandowski amongst a whole host of senior players. For Madrid, new players AntonioRudiger and Aurélien Tchouaméni started - whilst Eden Hazard was deployed as a center-forward. The rest of the line-up can be found below. The first half could easily be split into two segments. I was impressed with the intensity and some quality on show during the opening 25 minutes or so - with Rodrigo Silva de Goes and Eduardo Camavinga looking particularly sharp whenever the ball came their way. Madrid matched Barcelona and created a number of chances - but the first shot still fell to the Catalans. Robert Lewandowski pulled away but could not beat Thibaut Courts from a tight angle. FedeValverde then clattered the post with a very powerful effort from distance moments later. AnsuFati then should have scored on the back of an Eduardo blunder inside the area. Barcelona did take the lead when Raphinha narrowed a strike into the top corner past Courts - and from this moment the extra sharpness of a team who is three games in to their pre-season campaign took over. The second part of the half saw Barcelona really take the game to Madrid. Antonio, seemingly being used at left-back, hit a shot wide at one point - and then Valverde spooned a half-chance wide with the outside of his boot. Madrid managed to make it to half-time just the one goal down, and the team was sure to look very different after the break. Courts made a world-class save to deny Franck Yannick from doubling the lead

Madrid made six changes at half-time, with many of the usual big names entering the field. Barcelona made five changes themselves. It was one of their substitutes, PierreEmerick Aubameyang, that had the first chance of the half when he connected to a cross, but the ball went wide. Real Madrid did turn up the tempo at times, and Marco should have equalized after a good passage of play resulted in the ball being squared to him in-front of goal. Barcelona then had a penalty shout and the ball clearly struck the hand of Álvaro Odriozola, but the referee luckily didn’t catch it. Courts again showed why he is the world’s best goalkeeper when he denied Ousmane Dembélé during a one against one situation. He then made an even better save to deny the Frenchman after an opposition counter-attack. Mariano Díaz headed a chance wide late on after some good play, but Madrid did well to keep the game at 0-1 in all truths. Full time, and defeat in Las Vegas.
