Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTC) was invented by French engineer Jacques D'Arson val in 1881. However, at the time of writing, the Hawaiian Natural Energy Laboratory is home to the only active OTC plant on the face of the earth. OTC is a potential source of energy that needs to be funded and tested more than it currently is. The biggest obstacle to completing OTC implementation at a comprehensive and practical level is cost. It is difficult to reduce costs to a reasonable level because of the procedures currently in place to drive OTC. The warming power of the oceans can be pure heat and not pollute the air. However, as it will now need to be set up with our current technology, OTC plants will have the potential to disrupt and possibly damage the environment.
There are three types of OTC.
"Closed Cycle OTC" uses low-density boiling liquid, for example, propane, to act as a medium liquid. The OTC plant pumps warm seawater into the reaction chamber and boils the medium liquid. This causes a vapor in the middle to push the turbine's generator, thus generating electricity. The vapor is then cooled by adding cold seawater.
The "Open Cycle OTC" is no different from a closed cycling, except that in Open Cycle there is no central fluid. Seawater itself is the driver of the wind turbine in this OTC format. Warm seawater found on the surface of the oceans is converted into low-pressure vapor under a vacuum barrier. Low-pressure steam is emitted from a fixed surface and is capable of driving a turbine. To cool water vapor and to produce salted water for human consumption, cold seawater is added to the steam after it has produced enough electricity.
"Hybrid Cycle OTC" is actually just a theory right now. It seeks to explain how we can make the most of our thermal energy in seawater. There are actually two theories under Hybrid Cycling theory. The first involves using a closed bicycle to generate electricity. This gas is used to build the entrance needed to open the bicycles. The second part is the combination of two open bicycles that double the amount of salt extracted, drinking water created by just one open cycle.
In addition to being used to generate electricity, a closed-circuit OTC plant can be used for chemical treatment. OTC plants, both open-ended bicycle and closed-loop bicycle types, can also be used to pump deep seawater that can be used for refrigeration and ventilation. In addition, during the measurement period when seawater surrounds the plant, the enclosure can be used for marine farming projects and aquaculture such as fish farming.
