Final match of Boston Celtics
For all the festivity of skill and small ball in recent times, the NBA still rewards size and swiftness in big moments. In the first test game in TD Garden since 2010, the Boston Celtics used their speed, length and physical superiority to bury the Golden State soldiers 116-100 in Game 3 to take a 2-to-1 series lead.
The Celtics have erected their crown Bourne on the strength of their top-flight defense and the trapping of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, their brace of talented bushwhackers. Both the Celtics' defense and their tandem saw mixed results in San Francisco, where the brigades resolved the first two games. Boston's showed off its versatility, while Brown and Tatum turned in mature, heady performances that seized control of the game in the first half.
Brown has traditionally created many of his openings in the inflow rather than on set play calls during his first six NBA seasons. In Game 3, he asserted himself as a generator in the Celtics' half-court game. Brown attacked relentlessly with assertive drives to the handbasket against the soldiers' limited hem protection. When he encountered help protectors, he moved the ball carefully. When the soldiers' protective reels opened up quality looks from beyond the bow in the inflow, Brown reluctantly took those too. Overall, he finished with 27 points, hitting 9 of his 16 field goal attempts (including 4-for-8 from beyond the bow) and going 5-for-6 from the stripe.
On Wednesday, he scored 26 points on 9-for-23 shooting but, excelled as a playmaker. Following Game 2, Celtics trainer IME, Udoka attributed some of Tatum's struggles to his inclination to commit fouls. In Game 3, Tatum indented nine assists against only one development, largely by reading the soldiers' defense and chancing teammates instantly with smart cross court passes and kick outs.
Despite their outside advantages, the Celtics relegated themselves to the border and midrange in Game 2, taking only six shots at the rim. In Game 3, Boston had tried 14 shots at the hem by halftime, along with drawing four firing fouls, with Brown leading the attack. Those raids into the makeup greased the Celtics' drive-and-kick game. While the Celtics did not see the sheer volume of 3-point attempts they did in San Francisco, they still generated a healthy 35 attempts from beyond the bow, converting 37. Boston also finished with a 52–26 edge in points in the makeup.
In an exercise every bit as dependable as Stephen Curry's warm-up routine, the soldiers offered their hand in the third quarter. Having trailed for most of the night by double digits, Golden State took the lead compactly during a 14-3 run that included a seven-point possession over the span of 13 seconds. The Celtics eventually resisted the rush and steadily rebuilt their lead, despite outbursts from Curry. As the game slipped away from the soldiers in the fourth quarter with a little more than two twinkles remaining, Celtics big man Al Horford landed on Curry's left leg while diving for the ball. Curry limped off the bottom and didn't return--though neither did the rest of the soldiers' starters, with Golden State running by 14.
For the soldiers, who've been eager to see Thompson return to form, the loss is particularly bitter. Thompson scored 25 points on 17 attempts, one of his better postseason sweats--but one that was squandered. The soldiers turned the ball over 17 times and, indeed more ruinous, were crushed on their protective glass, yielding 15 decent rebounds to Boston.
Throughout their first postseason chase in three years, the soldiers have emphasized they are a different team than the bones.
That won three titles in five test appearances. That was more apparent than it has been during their current title run. This soldiers' platoon is still a work in progress, and for all of their collaborative basketball brilliance, there is some work to be done
