Muscle hypertrophy is the scientific name given to the phenomenon of growth in the size of muscle cells, which means an increase in the size of the muscle fibers and therefore of the muscle. Technically, it is the growth of muscle cells without there being a cell division, and the muscle subjected to this change also offers a better response to the load. There are two types of muscle growth, or hypertrophy: myofibrillar and sarcoplasmic. a. myofibrillar hypertrophy It is produced by the increase in myofibrils contained in the muscle fiber. By having more myofibrils, the cell widens, causing the muscles to also enlarge to a certain extent. The muscle becomes stronger and harder as its contractile units increase. This type of hypertrophy is achieved above all by training with heavy weights and low repetitions. In addition, this type of training is indicated to produce the neurological adaptation that induces the brain to recruit more fibers, increasing strength (Zimmerman, 2004). b. sarcoplasmic hypertrophy It is due to the increase in the amount of fluid contained in the muscle fibers.
