Starlink's development accelerated in 2021 following years of work at SpaceX. Starlink now counts more than 2,000 operational satellites orbiting the Earth after over two years and dozens of successful launches.
Starlink currently provides service in 37 countries around the world, but the startup internet provider still has a backlog of potential customers who are waiting to get equipment and begin service.
Not all controversy surrounds Starlink. Members of the scientific community are worried about how Starlink's low-earth orbit satellites would affect the ability to see the night sky. While this is going on, other satellite internet providers like Viasat, HughesNet, and Amazon's Project Kuiper have also noted Starlink's growth, which has sparked regulatory wrangling and efforts to restrain Musk. The most recent argument that Dish has had with Starlink relates to Starlink's assertion that Dish's satellite signals would be interfered with by the 5G expansions in the 12GHz band.
Starlink is the name of the expanding constellation, or network, of orbiting satellites operated by SpaceX, which is technically a division inside the corporation. The creation of the network started in 2015, and the first test satellites were sent into orbit in 2018.
Since then, SpaceX has launched dozens of times with success, putting thousands of Starlink satellites into orbit. The most recent launch, on October 27, placed 53 more satellites into low-Earth orbit. The total number of satellites in orbit now stands at just over 3,200.
According to the Starlink website, the company is best suited for regions of the world where connectivity has historically been difficult. "Because Starlink is not limited by traditional ground infrastructure, it can bring high-speed broadband internet to areas where connection was previously spotty or nonexistent."
