As the country braces itself for an increasing number of coronavirus illnesses, 69 instances of the JN.1 subvariant had been registered as of Monday, December 25. Up to 34 instances were reported from Karnataka, 14 from Goa, 9 from Maharashtra, 6 from Kerala, 4 from Tamil Nadu, and 2 from Telangana, according to statistics from the Health Ministry.
There were 4,170 current cases nationwide as of the recording date. According to data from the Union Health Ministry, Karnataka recorded 436 instances, Kerala 3096, Maharashtra 168, Gujarat 56, and Tamil Nadu 139.
What did the former director of AIIMS say?
Concerns about the new coronavirus variety are growing, and Dr. Randeep Guleria, the former director of AIIMS Delhi, has predicted that the number of cases will increase in the winter. "This is the time of year when respiratory and viral infections will increase. Whether it's COVID, RSV, influenza, or another viral infection, we encounter them annually. And both the heat and the crowded conditions contribute to that," he stated.

WHO designates the JN.1 strain as a "variant of interest."
Because of its fast spreading nature, the World Health Organisation has designated COVID-19 strain JN.1 as a distinct "variant of interest". It also presents a "low" worldwide public health risk, according to the health department. According to the global body, the JN.1 variant was previously categorised as a variable of interest (VOI) as a member of the parent lineage that is categorised as a VOI, the BA.2.86 sublineages. Additionally, the WHO predicted that this variety would lead to a spike in SARS-CoV-2 cases along with a wave of other viral and bacterial diseases, particularly in nations that are starting their winter season.
