A drawing purchased for just $30 (Rs 2,000) from a yard sale has turned out to be a German Renaissance art worth more than $10 million (Rs 74 crore).
The piece is actually a previously unknown work by German Renaissance artist Albrecht Durer from the 16th century.
According to reports, it was initially purchased at a yard sale in 2017. The artwork is now in possession of Agnew Gallery, a London-based auction house.
Durer, who died in 1529, was regarded as one of the key figures of the German Renaissance and the greatest artist of his time.
The previously unknown drawing is titled ‘The Virgin and Child’. Agnew said in a press release that it’s extremely rare to find unknown works by Durer because his legacy has been studied in great detail by scholars around the world/
Clifford Scorer, a Boston-based art collector and consultant for the gallery, is the person who first stumbled upon the artwork while he was in a Massachusetts bookstore in 2019.
According to reports, the owner of the bookstore had asked him to look at the drawing that was purchased by his friend. It so happened that the bookseller sold Scorer the drawing after speculating it might be an original by Durer.
Scorer said he was skeptical at first about the authenticity after finding out the drawing was sold by an architect who had acquired it from his art dealer father.
But just a few weeks later, he was shocked to see the drawing was actually an original by Durer.
“When you’re in my world you spend your life looking for unknown things that lead to fascinating research avenues … and I could see I was at the beginning of something extremely exciting,” Scorer told CNN.
Scorer said he embarked on a 3-year journey to verify the artwork. He met experts around the world by taking 17 international flights.
After confirming its authenticity, Scorer said the piece could be worth more than $10 million.
“In terms of relative value, I think you have to compare it to other old master drawings,” he said.
“In lifetime discoveries, this is the discovery of the lifetime”. We are so excited to finally unveil the newly discovered Durer Drawing virgin and child with a flower on a grassy bench circa 1503.
