   The changes that have occurred in the state of health of the Cuban population in the last three decades are an expression of the high priority and the efforts made by the Revolution in the social sphere in the qualitative transformation of the standard of living of citizens. Cuba has been carrying out important reforms in its health system since the 1960s as a fundamental part of the changes of the revolutionary period. The Cuban social health system has determined that the practice of medicine and dentistry be oriented to the community, that both be preventive-curative, that the health organization be integrated into a single agency, the Ministry of Public Health, the which has as its main objective to improve the quality of life of the population, having for this a holistic and integrating vision of the organism (1-3).

 

Achieving satisfactory longevity motivates reflection not only among the population of all ages, but also among health professionals. Life expectancy is 25% conditioned by genes; but the remaining 75% depends on the factors recognized under the lifestyle concept. In recent years, life expectancy has reached extraordinary limits, it is estimated, for example, that children born now will be able to live 100 years. Cuba is one of the Latin American countries with the longest life expectancy, with an average of 75 years; but it is not only about living more, but about doing it better. For this reason, public health efforts are now focused on improving people's quality of life by promoting healthy lifestyles. How many years will you live? It is not easy to answer this question, genetics influences, but not as much as one might think, only 25% of vital potential is due to heredity, the rest depends on life, that is, on food, on doing or do not sport, if you smoke or drink alcohol. While it is true that people who live many years come from families where longevity prevails, heredity will have little influence if certain healthy habits are not maintained. 

To achieve a better quality of life, one must reflect on those risk factors that multiply every day in modern life and are increasingly present at different ages, such as: diet, physical activity, stress, smoking and alcoholism.
