Every cricket fan used to talk about Virat Kohli’s protracted lean phase, but ever since he made a century against Afghanistan in the T20 Asia Cup last year, the Indian batsman is back to doing what he does best.
In the first four games of the IPL 2023, he has scored three half-centuries for Royal Challengers Bangalore, displaying a masterful batsman’s touch.
The former RCB captain has since opened out about his difficult times and how he came to the realization that this might be the final month of competitive cricket.
The fact that I was willing to let go of everything during that entire changeover period prior to the Asia Cup last year was the most crucial element. After 1205 days, he finally reached his century in Test cricket on March 12. It was his 28th Test century and his 75th overall.
According to he, he felt the need to prove himself by giving his “absolute best” and that he was living with “a façade on top” because of everyone’s incessant expectations of him.
I didn’t get the impression that I could do whatever I wanted based on my past performances. I had the impression that I needed to defend my constant presence. If I can’t do it naturally, then something needs to change. I need to make sure that I am contributing everything I have. It felt manufactured and strange, like I was living behind a façade. I wanted to express that I want to live the way I want to live, and if that means the journey is over, then be it, said he.
