As the disease progresses, the furious phase sets in. This phase is characterized by hyperactivity, agitation, restlessness, and irritability. Patients may exhibit abnormal behavior, such as aggression and hallucinations. Anxiety and difficulty swallowing may lead to a fear of water, known as hydrophobia. This fear is caused by painful spasms in the throat muscles upon attempting to drink, even though the individual may be dehydrated. 

Alternatively, some individuals may enter the paralytic phase of rabies, which accounts for a smaller percentage of cases. In this phase, muscle weakness, paralysis, and a decrease in consciousness occur. Paralysis usually begins in the lower limbs and then progresses upwards. 

Once clinical symptoms manifest, the disease is almost always fatal. Death often occurs due to respiratory failure, as the muscles responsible for breathing become paralyzed. 

It is crucial to seek immediate medical attention if there is any suspicion of exposure to rabies. Early diagnosis and treatment, known as post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), can help prevent the onset of symptoms and save lives. However, once symptoms appear, there is no known cure for rabies, underscoring the importance of prevention and timely intervention.
