1. Freaky (2020)
There are a lot of movies that go unnoticed, and while Freaky (2020) might not seem like a hidden gem, it does a fantastic job of striking the right mix between comedy and horror. The body swap idea has, of course, appeared in many films; Freaky Friday being the most well known. Naturally, though, this movie has a darker tone, with Kathryn Newton portraying a high school student who unintentionally swaps bodies with serial murderer Vince Vaughn. It's a bizarrely hilarious classic that combines the body exchange trope with the slasher genre with cartoonist deaths and ridiculous scenes.
2. The Guilty (2018)
To be clear, there is a compelling 2021 American remake of The Guilty starring Jake Gyllenhaal, but the incredible 2018 Danish original film, also titled The Guilty, directed by Gustav Moller, is the real deal. The main character of the movie is Asger Holm, a Copenhagen police officer assigned to desk duty and responsible for responding to emergency calls at the police station. The plot begins when the irate police officer answers a call one night while on duty from a woman who subtly claims she has been abducted.Even though the majority of the movie takes place in a single location, the police station in this case, Moller and Holm succeed in building suspense and holding our interest throughout this underappreciated masterpiece, which is no minor accomplishment.
3.The Kindergarten Teacher (2018)
The Kindergarten Teacher (2018), which was directed by Sara Colagenlo, is a masterwork even though it's not one of Netflix's most well known original films—this is mostly because the streaming site hasn't done much to promote it. The movie, which is based on the same titled Israeli film from 2014, tells the story of a kindergarten teacher and aspiring poet whose discontent with life becomes a subdued obsession when she learns that one of her young students is actually a prodigy. Maggie Gyllenhaal's compelling portrayal as a woman who loses her hold and makes increasingly poor judgments as a result of her obsession is one of the key reasons the movie is worth seeing.
4.Missing (2023)
When box office blockbusters eclipse critically praised films during their theatrical run, sometimes critically acclaimed pictures slip through the cracks. And earlier this year, this is precisely what happened to the under appreciated thriller Missing, which is the stand-alone follow up to 2018's Searching (which is mentioned below). Unfortunately, the release of the viral sensation M3GAN and the blockbuster Avatar: The Way of Water coincided with the screen life thriller's theatrical debut earlier this year. Fans largely ignored the film as a result of this. Thank goodness, the suspenseful movie discovered a new, and deserved, audience on Netflix. The thrilling tale, which is portrayed only on computer and smart phone displays, centers on Storm Reid, an adolescent who is searching for her mother, who has vanished.
5.Searching
Possibly one of the most under appreciated movies of the past ten years is Aneesh Chaganty's 2018 thriller Searching, which centers on the efforts of a father (played by John Cho) to locate his daughter who vanished. The critically praised movie not only has a gripping plot with plenty of twists and turns to keep audiences on the edge of their seats, but it also does so even when the tale is told entirely on computer and smart phone screens.Searching reliance on the digital screen as a medium for storytelling contributed to the growth of the screen life thriller sub genre. Furthermore, Cho's engrossing, nuanced portrayal of a desperate father brought to life a very emotional tale that highlighted the relationship between a parent and their adolescent daughter.
