UK Raises Car Accidents As Jaguar Land Rover Looks For Batteries Elsewhere
A major British car manufacturer is in talks with two suppliers about a list of EVs that could be integrated into Slovakia.
Nearly a decade after playing host to Europe’s first mass-produced electric car, the UK is at risk of becoming a downside to the global automotive industry’s transformation into battery-powered cars.
The UK does not have cell factories, and packages for car manufacturers will need to support their conversion away from internal combustion engines. Possibly making a new contribution to the making of British cars, South Africa's leading car company, Jaguar Land Rover, is in talks with North volt AB and SVolt Energy Technology Co. about supplying batteries for a variety of EVs that could be assembled in Slovakia, according to people familiar with this issue.
Unless the battery investment is growing, car manufacturers can only speed up their exit from what used to be the world's second-largest automotive manufacturing facility. Over the past few years, the UK has dropped out of the top 15.
"It is time to retain the UK's role as a major car manufacturer," said Andy Palmer, former Aston Martin CEO who also helped lead the construction of the Nissan Leaf EV in Sunderland, England. "Unless there is a carrot or a stick to promote battery production in the UK, it is only a matter of time before the automotive industry here becomes a niche industry supplying products like Rolls-Royce and Bentley."
As the move to electric vehicles redesigns production maps, the UK is at risk due to a shortage of raw materials, expensive energy, low government compensation and potential Brexit-related taxes. Although the country has invested hundreds of millions of pounds in battery technology research, this has encouraged little production.
To date, the UK has one major operational center, headed by China's Envision Group. The manufacturer increased production of long-distance Nissan Leaf EV packages last year and announced growth plans, albeit until 2024 in the first place.
A spokesman for Jaguar Land Rover, which produced more than 220,000 vehicles in the UK last year, said the manufacturer continues to evaluate all EV battery supply options and that no decisions have been made. Representatives of North volt and SVolt declined to comment.
Only from 2030 will the United Kingdom prohibit burnout vehicles.
Electric cars create a problem for chickens and eggs. Automotive manufacturers are reluctant to build new factories or reuse existing ones to make EVs because of battery space in or near. Battery manufacturers are generally reluctant to invest billions of dollars in plant production without reliable customers within a short distance.
British volt is among the few that have announced plans to build bigger battery plants in the UK, but strict orders and manufacturer's obligations are lacking. That could be a persistent obstacle, as most of the industry is home to low-end products and sports cars such as McLaren, Bentley, Aston Martin, and Lotus.
Although Nissan Motor Co., Stellantis NV, and Bentley-owned Volkswagen AG are committed to making EVs in the UK, analysts have warned that more investment is needed to secure the industry's position. The Green Finance Institute's Coalition for the Decarbonization of Road Transport said in a report this month that to maintain the current size of the automotive industry, the UK needs to increase battery capacity by 45 to more than 90 gigawatt hours.
"If the battery industry does not come from the UK, there is both a loss in the financial benefits of seized batteries and a risk that the existing UK car industry could be reduced by relocating," said the government-backed party.

There has been some good progress.
British volt has broken ground on the first major UK battery factory in northern England, aiming to produce 30 gigawatt hours by the end of 2027—enough cells for about 300,000 EV battery packs a year. It acquired its first partnerships with Aston Martin, with whom it developed its first fully-fledged electric model for 2025, and Lotus.
An independent business between the owners of Coventry airport and its city council in central England, called the West Midlands Gigafactory, aims to open in 2025 and ultimately offer 60 gigawatt hours a year in full. But it is unclear whether it will be successful without the support of a major automotive manufacturer.
The window for attracting battery makers is shrinking, as European governments are developing large-scale support packages that have made them more attractive to investors. EU member states have pledged more than 6 billion euros ($6.3 billion) in public spending to develop the industry, with the hope of attracting an additional $14 billion in private funds.
This month, VW said it was moving ahead with EV 10 billion euro battery plans and a car manufacturing hub at its Seat plants in Martorell and Pamplona, Spain. This follows the announcement by a coalition led by Stellantis and Mercedes-Benz Group AG that they will add a third battery production facility in Italy, in addition to those already planned for Germany and France.
The trade agreement established between the UK and the European Union after Brexit made things even more difficult. Although initially it was a relief for car makers because the industry avoided a catastrophic disaster, the agreement closes the way forward. By 2027, parts of the components for EVs and hybrids will need to be acquired locally—from the EU or the UK—to qualify for tax-free trade.
