As of August 2022, Fury is ranked as the world's best active heavyweight by ESPN. He is also ranked as the fourth best-active boxer, pound-for-pound, by ESPN, sixth by the TBRB and seventh by the Boxing Writers Association of America.
After his own 5 p.m. deadline on Monday, Tyson Fury announced he would not fight Anthony Joshua because "no contract has been signed."
The WBC champion Fury gave Joshua and his team an ultimatum on Sunday if they wanted to stage their all-British heavyweight fight this year. Joshua responded by saying he would sign the contract to fight Fury.
Fury, who had first demanded that Joshua sign the contract by Monday, returned to Instagram to inform Joshua that he had until 5 p.m. to do so or he will back out of the agreement.
Fury sets Anthony Joshua ultimatum
However, Fury later said on Instagram: "It's official. D-Day has already passed. On Monday, it is now almost 5 p.m., and no contract has been signed. For Joshua, it's effectively over now. He has since joined the wolfpack outside in the cold.
"I always knew you didn't have the minerals to battle the Gypsy King," he continues. I wish you success in both your career and in life.
Fury received reassurance from Joshua on Sunday that the deal would be signed. Joshua said: "It's not in my hands, it's with the legal staff. That is why you employ attorneys. Make sure your legal words are accurate because you are knowledgeable with boxing's history. I'm going to sign a contract, of course. Right now, it's only with a few lawyers.
Fury may still compete before the year is up, but the undisputed confrontation with Oleksandr Usyk, whick is holder of the WBO, WBA, and IBF titles, will have to wait until the next year.
Last week, Mahmoud Charr urged Tyson Fury to challenge him in December rather than Joshua.
Following AJ's two consecutive losses to Usyk, former WBA "regular" champion Charr argues Fury shouldn't be fighting Joshua.
"First of all, it's bad for boxing if Fury fights AJ next. "AJ is mentally damaged and needs time to heal after his two defeats," Charr said to Sky Sports.
"Eddie [will] have to change his company if Eddie Hearn takes this bout against Tyson Fury. Given AJ's current mental state, I believe Fury will deliver a poor knockout.
"Everyone is aware that Fury has repeatedly pledged to face me. He must battle the actual Superman if he is the true Spartan. It's me.
"I had a five-win run prior to this one, and God gave me another opportunity at life. Everyone is aware that I had two hip surgery and was shot in the stomach. Never forget that I became the first Arabic heavyweight champion in the world seven months later.
I'll drive this punch straight through his face, he continued.
"The moral of this story, like that of Fury, is to never give up and fight for legacy. Next, I want Fury. Spartan, don't be afraid; accept my challenge!"
"I'm trying to acquire an opponent for December 3, and if AJ fights then I'll eat hay with the donkeys, and if he doesn't then I'll fight someone else," Fury said in closing.
"They're all fleeing in terror. Anytime, everywhere, I'll fight anyone.
