Twelve people have walked on Earth's Moon, starting Neil Armstrong and ending Gene Kernan. All crewed moon landings took place between July 1969 and December 1972 as part of the United States Apollo program. All twelve people who have walked on the Moon are American men.
Americans alive at the time remember it as the night of July 20, 1969 (Armstrong set foot on the Moon at 10:56 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time), but it was the 21st in UTC.
1) Armstrong had left the US Navy and was already a NASA employee when he and Elliot See became the first civilian astronauts in Astronaut Group 2. See Armstrong's NASA biography and a description of his receiving a NASA award, among others.
2) Dr. Edwin Eugene "Buzz" Aldrin, Jr., retired Colonel (born January 20, 1930) is an American pilot and astronaut. He was one of the Apollo 11 astronauts and the second person to have ever walked on the moon.
3) Charles "Pete" Conrad, Jr. (June 2, 1930 – July 8, 1999) was an American test pilot, aeronautical engineer and astronaut. During the Apollo 12 flight, he became the third man to walk on the Moon
4) Alan Lavern Bean (March 15, 1932 – May 26, 2018), (Capt, USN, RET.), was an American former naval officer and aviator, aeronautical engineer, test pilot, and NASA astronaut.
5) Alan Shepard (November 18, 1923 - July 21, 1998)[2] was an American astronaut. He was the first American to travel into space. He was born in East Derry, New Hampshire.[2] He received a Bachelor of Science at Naval Academy in 1944, graduated at Naval Test pilot School in 1951 'and' he earned a Master of Arts at the Naval War College in 1957.
6) Dr. Edgar Dean "Ed" Mitchell, (September 17, 1930 – February 4, 2016), (Capt, USN, RET.) was an American retired naval officer and aviator, test pilot, aeronautical engineer, parapsychologist, and NASA astronaut. He was a moon walker.
7) David Randolph "Dave" Scott (born June 6, 1932), (Col, USAF, RET.), is an American former NASA astronaut, retired U.S. Air Force officer and former test pilot. He belonged to the third group of NASA astronauts, selected in October 1963. As an astronaut, Scott became the seventh person to walk on the Moon.
8) James Benson "Jim" Irwin (March 17, 1930 – August 8, 1991) (Col, USAF) was an American astronaut and test pilot.
9) Captain John Watts Young (September 24, 1930 – January 5, 2018) was an American astronaut, naval officer and aviator, test pilot, and aeronautical engineer. He became the ninth person to walk on the Moon as Commander of the Apollo 16 mission in 1972.[1] Young was on the first orbital Space Shuttle mission, STS-1, in April 1981. He was the only person to have piloted, and been commander of, four different classes of spacecraft: Gemini, the Apollo Command/Service Module, the Apollo Lunar Module, and the Space Shuttle.
10) Charles Moss "Charlie" Duke Jr. (born October 3, 1935), (Brig Gen, USAF, RET.), is an American former astronaut, retired U.S. Air Force officer and test pilot. As Lunar Module Pilot for Apollo 16 in 1972, he became the tenth and youngest person to walk on the Moon.
11) Gene Kernan is known as the person to have most recently walked on the Moon. This list illustrates the first person to egress on each mission. Kernan was the first to egress but was the last person back in the lunar module, so he was the 11th to walk on the Moon and the most recent to have walked on it.
12) Dr. Harrison Hagen "Jack" Schmitt (born July 3, 1935) is an American geologist, retired NASA astronaut, university professor, former U.S. senator from New Mexico. He is the most recent living person to have walked on the Moon. As of 2018, he is also the last living crew member of Apollo 17.
