TopAssessing the toxicity of chemical compounds associated with marine land-based fish farms: The use of mini-scale microalgal toxicity tests

Abstract

Numerous chemicals presently employed in aquaculture lack evaluation regarding their specific impacts on aquatic ecosystems. This study assessed the toxic effects of various substances associated with land based marine fish farming using two marine micro algae species (Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Isochrysis globing). mini scale toxicity tests were conducted with six antibiotics (amoxicillin, ampicillin, flu equine, ox tetracycline, streptomycin, and sulfadiazine) and two disinfectants (formaldehyde and hypochlorite). Amoxicillin and streptomycin showed no toxic effects. Sulfadiazine was the most toxic compound, with com values of 0.11 mogul for P. tricornutum and 1.44 mogul for I. globing. As anticipated, the disinfectants exhibited high toxicity, with P. tricornutum being especially sensitive to these substances. Although micro algal sensitivity varied depending on the chemical, both species demonstrated high sensitivity to most tested compounds. We recommend incorporating mini scale micro algal toxicity tests into environmental risk assessment (ERA) and monitoring programs, as they are cost effective and rapid.
