Top The Difference Between CBG and CBD, Explained

Did you know that 26% of Americans used CBD products in 2022? Others still may know the basics of the popular cannabidiol but not know that it can have different forms. The most common forms are CBG and CBD, but there may still be confusion as to how they differ.

Understanding the difference between CBG vs CBD is essential for buying the right CBD product. Also, this helps you know the difference in their effects.

Read more to learn what the difference between CBG and CBD is.

What is CBG?

CBG, or cannabigerol, is a minor, nonpsychoactive cannabinoid commonly found in hemp and cannabis plants. CBG is the precursor to a variety of other cannabinoids.

It is the first cannabinoid produced in the early stages of the cannabis plant’s life cycle. It is also the cannabinoid from which both THC and CBD are actually synthesized.

CBG is the “parent” of all other cannabinoids, and its unique properties may have their own range of medical benefits. The most common application for CBG isolate is in topical products like cosmetics, although it is also used in tinctures, soft gels, and pressed tablets.

This is why most people turn to CBG isolate wholesale because of its many uses.

What is CBD?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a more common cannabinoid that can be extracted from the cannabis plant. Unlike CBG, it is mostly found in higher concentrations in mature plants.

While it also acts on the endocannabinoid system, it works differently than the other cannabinoids and carries potentially stronger medicinal properties. CBD products have become popular due to their non-intoxicating effects and wide range of potential medical benefits.

Chemical Structures of CBG and CBD

Cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabigerol (CBG) have similar chemical structures, with slightly different arrangements of atoms, but unique physical and health benefits. CBG has a more compound-like structure, while CBD is a much more simplified version of CBG.

CBD is the most abundant cannabinoid found in hemp and cannabis plants, making up about 40% of their extracted composition. On the other hand, CBG is present in much smaller amounts, at about 1-2%.

CBG also binds directly to serotonin and TRPV1 receptors in the body and has the potential to serve as a great antidepressant.

Pharmacological Activity of CBG vs CBD

These two also differ in their pharmacological activity; CBD is an inhibitor of the endocannabinoid system, while CBG is an agonist.

By modulating different receptors and physiological pathways, they can contribute to chronic and inflammatory conditions in different ways.

Uses of CBG and CBD

CBG has been found to promote appetite, reduce nausea, and alleviate pain. This cannabinoid is also thought to ease symptoms associated with glaucoma. Other CBG uses include the potential to treat cancer and epilepsy.

CBD is mostly used to decrease pain and inflammation, while CBG is considered more effective in treating conditions like gastrointestinal ulcers and retinal degeneration. CBD has also been researched more and is generally more widely known.

Knowing the Difference Between CBG and CBD

Many states and countries have legalized the use of CBG and CBD. Knowing the difference between CBG and CBD helps you understand better how they function and how you can benefit from them.

CBG and CBD are both powerful cannabinoids without psychoactive properties. CBG appears to show promise in multiple areas for which CBD is widely used, but further research and trials are needed to understand the full potential of CBG.
