Cricket isn’t like the other popular ball sports of the world. Cricket was invented in England and made its way to Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and beyond during the colonial days of the British Empire. The game is more than 400 years old, and it’s widely considered to be one of the top three most-played sports in the world alongside soccer and basketball. Of course, none of that matters much if you don’t know anything about cricket or if you’re an expert looking to get even better at your favorite sport.

1) Sachin Tendulkar
Sachin Tendulkar is probably the most famous cricket player in the world. He played his first international game for India at age 16, and scored 34 runs against England. Twenty years later, he played his 200th and final game for India in November 2012 against West Indies. Sachin was honored as one of seven members inducted into the inaugural class of the ICC Hall of Fame in 2009.

Australian cricketer, Shane Warne is a three-time winner of Cricketer of the Year in Wisden. He is noted for his quality right arm leg spin and variety including off-spin. Brian Lara is considered one of cricket's greatest batsmen. He has held the record for most runs in a test match, with 439 runs against England in 2004. He also holds the world record for highest individual score by an international cricketer, with 400 not out against England on his home ground in 2003. Brian Lara is still playing and as such remains as an active part of international cricket.

Ricky Ponting is a player who made his name as one of Australia's top batsmen. He has won a large number of awards in Australia including the Allan Border Medal (six times), the International Cricket Council Player of the Year Award and six times been named in ICC Team Of The Year. Ponting retired from international cricket in 2012 with his country.
5) Steve Waugh
Steve Waugh played for Australia and was a second-generation cricketer. He won more matches for Australia than any other player in history, including 45 tests and seven one-day internationals as captain. He retired in 2002 with a batting average over 40 from 168 test innings.
6) Kumar Sangakkara
Kumar Sangakkara is a Sri Lankan cricket player and considered one of the greatest cricketers in his country. He has taken over 60 Test matches and 12 One Day Internationals to reach this accomplishment. Sangakkara is known for his personality as well as his impressive bat swing style.
He started playing at a young age and was first noticed when he captained Sri Lanka to victory at the under-19 world cup in 1998.
