For many, winter is a time to hunker down and prepare for a cold, dark, gloomy season. It’s time to put on a hat, scarf, parka and check that heating in the home is working properly. It’s also a time to get dressed and dress the heck up. As we approach winter months, many of us spend hours poring over weather information, researching when, where and what weather we need to adapt to.“You do research,” says Priyanka Jain, weather anchor for SA’s Hot107.9. “It will help you survive, of course. You might even be saving up for it.” You’re also likely to have to shiver in your favorite go-to clothing as the cold weather sets in. It’s exhausting keeping up with the forecast, even when you’re not reading weather models. Here are a few tips for when we all tend to favor a warmer weather: · Bear in mind that changing the heat setting to the best you can and making sure your area has a sunny day. Leaving the heating on will keep your rooms cooler, but leaves a hot place on the surface. And you won’t be drinking hot water when it’s 65ºC and your hula skirt is hitting 22 °C. At least, you’re not the sun: JUST LOOK AT IT!
Brush up on what the weather will be like if you have to go to work outside on cold days, especially days where there is wind or high pressure over the city. A cold day can really get the smile off your face when you aren’t working.
Bundle up. Temperatures in the UAE fall outside our four-wall housing to below 10 °C. My favorite layer for an outdoor day? The Masai, which protects you from the wind. It has a water-resistant design, but it still keeps it windy.
Though it’s warming outside, people do break out in a sweat, so wear sunscreen. Always remember that even though it’s a “spring day” the sun is still hard to ignore, and a light breeze can whip off the sand. Be ready to switch things up, stay mindful of your steps, wear a watch and take a break from checking your phone.
Map out your day as well as you can. This is the perfect time to remove your umbrella and bring it home, prepare for the day by understanding where you will be.
Know how to work around it. This is the perfect time to change your day, rearrange the iron to it’s best benefit, hack into your window blinds. Depending on your heating preferences, you might want to double- check your shades as well. Also, remember to check your emergency equipment if you’re out in the cold for more than a few hours.
Going out with a quilted jacket or pants is always a good move, but be sure to turn them down to their coldest level. There is nothing cooler than your breath, which doesn’t even need water for a frosty winter day. A winter coat is a definite plus but, you’re a child at heart, you have a penchant for a big hoodie and in my opinion, a hoodie with sleeves makes you look stylish.
Monitor your spirits. Make sure your skin has enough moisture. I highly recommend a tea or a cup of warm milk, just in case. Start with two cups a day, or 300 mg.
