1. The Peaceful Life of the Monkey
Once upon a time, in a lush green forest on the banks of the Ganga, lived a clever monkey named Bholu. He was cheerful, full of life, and loved jumping from tree to tree. His favorite spot was a huge mango tree that stood proudly near the riverbank. The tree gave him sweet mangoes every season, and the river nearby provided a cool breeze and fresh water to drink. Bholu had everything he needed and was quite content with his simple life.
2. A Strange Visitor
One hot summer afternoon, as Bholu was enjoying a juicy mango, he noticed something moving in the water below. It was a crocodile named Kallu. Kallu appeared tired and hungry. Feeling pity for the poor creature, Bholu plucked a few mangoes and tossed them into the river. Kallu ate them happily and thanked Bholu with a big smile.
3. The Growing Friendship
From that day on, Bholu and Kallu became good friends. Every day, Bholu would drop mangoes for Kallu, and they would talk for hours. Bholu would share stories of forest life, while Kallu would talk about the wonders of the deep river. Days turned into weeks, and their bond grew stronger. The monkey found joy in giving, and the crocodile found comfort in companionship.
4. A Wicked Idea
However, all was not well on the other side of the river. Kallu's wife, Kalpana, was a greedy and cunning crocodile. When Kallu told her about Bholu and the delicious mangoes, she became jealous. “Why are you wasting time with that monkey?” she scolded. “If the mangoes are so tasty, just imagine how sweet the monkey’s heart would be after eating them daily!” Kalpana wanted to eat Bholu’s heart. She hatched an evil plan and convinced Kallu to bring the monkey to their side of the river.
5. The Trick Invitation
Kallu, though unwilling, agreed to his wife's demand. The next day, he swam up to Bholu and said, “My friend, why don’t you come to my house? My wife would love to meet you. She has made a special feast for you with fruits from the riverbed.” Bholu was a bit suspicious but also curious. “But how will I cross the river?” he asked. “Simple,” said Kallu. “Climb on my back. I’ll take you safely across.”
6. The Shocking Truth
As they reached the middle of the river, the water grew deep and the current strong. Bholu noticed a change in Kallu’s face. His smile had turned wicked. “Bholu,” said Kallu hesitantly, “I must tell you the truth. My wife wants to eat your heart, so I am taking you to her.” Bholu was shocked but did not panic. He knew he had to act smart to save his life.
7. The Clever Monkey’s Plan
Thinking quickly, Bholu pretended to be calm. “Oh, Kallu, why didn’t you tell me earlier?” he said. “I would have brought my heart if I knew! You see, we monkeys don’t carry our hearts in our bodies. We keep them safe on trees.” Kallu was confused but believed Bholu. “Let’s go back then,” said Bholu. “Take me to the tree, and I will get my heart for your wife.”
8. Back to Safety
Kallu turned around and swam back to the mango tree. As soon as they reached the riverbank, Bholu leapt off his back and climbed the highest branch in no time. “Oh foolish crocodile!” Bholu shouted. “You believed a monkey would carry his heart separately? Go and tell your wicked wife that she’ll have to chew on disappointment instead of my heart!” Kallu felt ashamed and helpless. He knew he had been outwitted.
9. The Lesson Learned
From that day on, Kallu never tried to trick anyone again. He would sometimes swim near the mango tree but never dared to ask Bholu for anything. Bholu forgave him eventually but kept a safe distance. He understood that even friends could sometimes be dangerous. He continued to live happily on the mango tree, wiser and more careful.
10. Moral of the Story
This story teaches us that intelligence and presence of mind can save us from the biggest dangers. It also reminds us that not everyone who appears friendly has good intentions. One must always stay alert and use their wit to face tricky situations.
