Associate Deba Kumar Burman stated that the Pranamikas were simply twenty-one and still in school when they ran away nearly thirty years ago and started a family in an extremely small apartment in a separate area in Guwahati. From his initial job as an assistant in TV serials for a daily wage of Rs one hundred and fifty to later producing TV shows together with his married wife, building a chain of half a dozen big integer turnovers in Guwahati, Deba Kumar did not let the spark of romance turn their lives around.
“I was constantly thinking about how to keep my wife happy and comfortable, knowing very well that she was born with a silver spoon,” says Deba Kumar. Today, along with his married wife, he owns twenty one restaurants located in many parts of Guwahati under the full names of J Fourteen, Shillong Greek Deity, Punjabi Oven and J 14 Kancha Morris.
Each brand specializes in food joints – J 14 outlets are famous for Calcutta rolls and momos, Shillong Momos for their momos, Punjabi Oven for Punjabi food and J 14 Kancha Morris (meaning inexperienced cool) for authentic Bengali dishes. The couple established their initial J fourteen outlets in 1997 opposite Gauhati Commerce College, one of Guwahati's most famous faculties.
We usually started with an associate degree investment of Rs 80,000, which we managed with my scooter business and some savings, recalls Deba Kumar. In the beginning, we tend to think about starting with food. He later registered for an undergraduate course at Cotton College, Guwahati, but was born in the second year. I even have to release some music videos too,” says Deba Kumar.
Pranamika was doing her bachelor's degree when she met Deba Kumar and they also fell in love. Her father was a Deputy District Magistrate at the time she decided to tie the knot with Deba Kumar. I persuaded Pranamika not to back out of the wedding,” says Deba Kumar.
The initial days were strong as they started their family life in a one-room flat paying a monthly rent of Rs 350. “We got burned on the stove and had a lot to manage,” he says. “I found a job as a diploma assistant in an extraordinary television production house for Rs one hundred and fifty a day.
In 1997, we tend to do a weekly show specializing in the Northeast,” says Pranamika. In the same year, they jointly launched the first J fourteen stores. After we started, we have four employees,” says Deba Kumar. During the first year, their revenue from the store was Rs.2.5 million. In 2004, they opened their second branch on GS Road in Guwahati and another branch a year later in front of another school in the city.
Fourteen establishments of Business School J became the central kitchen, because the couple needed to maintain an identical style in every respect in the establishments. Employees delivered food on wheels to the opposite 2 stores.
I keep telling Americans who told me they met their husbands in J 14, how they dated and planned in our stores,” says Deba Kumar. Deba Kumar, who quit his job at Doordarshan in 1999, has also tried working in a huge number of alternative ventures.
“I would like to send a message to the youth of India, I am trying to find ten who are serious about making money through the J 14 cloud room model and take them to the elements of India,” says Deba Kumar. Deba Kumar and Pranamika have 2 daughters, Sonalika (25) and Aashmika (16) and the eldest has also joined the family business.
