When Grassroots Motorsports arrived on the scene 30 years ago – back when it was called Auto-X magazine – the world of sports cars was going through a rough time. Famous brands like MG, Triumph and Austin-Healey have long left our coast, while Alfa Romeo's Spider has been a carryover for decades. The once powerful Corvette was new, but it exploded. Even the Porsche 911 faces an uncertain future.
Then came the Mazda MIATE. This little roadster revived the flat-lining sports car market, and it was a real treat, too: a rear-facing chassis, a flexible engine, a five-speed gearbox, a stunning look and a more compact space. It didn’t cost a mint, either. Twenty-five years after its release, MIATE is still the foundation of our region.
Here's what we learned about MIATE for the rest of its life: This is a difficult thing and can happily bring decades of service — and that service can be quite different. You can run one in the national tournament or simply use it to download your Sunday coffee.
If they do not do so, people will soon begin to replicate those examples. MIATE is the MGB of our generation.
