MUMBAI: Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani (born 19 April 1957) is an Indian business magnate, chairman, managing director, and the largest shareholder of Reliance Industries Ltd. a Fortune Global 500 company and India's most valuable company by market value. Mukesh Ambani, one of the wealthiest people in the nation, has started the long-awaited leadership transfer at the energy-to-retail conglomerate Reliance by appointing his elder son to the position of chairman of its telecoms division. After the tycoon declared his children would play major roles in the company last year and that Reliance was "in the process of executing a momentous leadership shift," the decision is the first indication of upheaval in Ambani's empire. By giving his son the presidency of Reliance's telecoms division, Mukesh Ambani has started the company's long-awaited leadership transfer.
Details on Ambani's three children, who are anticipated to have more influence over India's largest business, which is estimated to be worth $200 billion, are provided below.
Akash Ambani - 30:
Akash, Ambani's elder son, joined the leadership team at the group's telecom unit, Reliance Jio, in 2014, soon after completing his graduation in economics from Brown University. As a non-executive director, he worked closely on the company's strategy and growth plans that made Jio India's biggest telecom operator with more than 400 million subscribers. He will now be the chairman of the telecom unit, Reliance said Tuesday.
Akash has been closely involved in product development and employee engagement to bring a "young and vibrant culture", the company says. An avid cricketer, he also plays a key role in the management of Mumbai Indians, a Reliance-owned team in IPL, the world's richest cricket league.
Akash was also part of a team that brokered $5.7 billion.
Isha Ambani - 30:
Akash's twin sister, Isha, is already in charge of the company's retail, e-commerce, and luxury plans. Reliance is also India's largest brick-and-mortar retailer, with plans to rapidly expand into e-commerce to compete with Amazon.
She is also involved in expanding Reliance's fashion presence through the Ajio e-commerce app and Reliance's partnerships with top international brands.
30-year-old Isha Ambani has studied psychology at the prestigious Yale University. She then studied MBA at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. She briefly worked as a business analyst at McKinsey & Company before returning from the US.
Isha graduated from Stanford with a degree in business management. Last year, Fortune magazine dubbed her "Heiress on Duty," and ranked her as the 21st most powerful woman in India.
According to Reuters, she is closely involved in the conceptualization of a new Reliance mall, including how the company pitches the highly sensitive placement of rival luxury brands next to each other.
In 2018, Isha married Anand Piramal, the son of a billionaire industrialist with interests in real estate and pharma.
Anant Ambani - 27:
Anant is Ambani's youngest son, and he is responsible for the conglomerate's new energy business, which is a key area of investment for the Ambanis.
Reliance is competing to be at the forefront of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ambitious plan to increase green energy capacity.
Reliance has big plans for diversifying into clean energy projects like solar and green hydrogen. Anant has previously addressed audiences at company events alongside Akash and Isha. Anant received his bachelor's degree from Brown University in 2017.
